To the Board -

I am forwarding to you this email from the Michigan Education Foundation, which announces a workshop on Nov. 17 and the next Michigan Education Foundation Assn meeting on Dec. 5.  Please let me know if you are interested in going to either or both of these events.  I am planning to go to both.

Dear MEF,

A few quick updates:

  • Meeting notes from the October 3 are available on the Google Drive:  https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1vubHtrIDN6bE9KaEdkanZ4d2c?usp=sharing
  • Michele Suchovsky from Grand Rapids uploaded her table-hosted events documents (from her 10/3 presentation) to the MEF’s Google Drive.  You’ll find the docs in the “fund development” folder.
  • Kent ISD is hosting a fundraising workshop on Thursday November 17th. This 1 ½ hour workshop is called Donor Databases for Beginners and is perfect for small organizations and school foundations who are just thinking about getting or upgrading their donor database. Workshop is $10; see the flyer on the Google Drive.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 5.  Rich Howard, currently the Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters Michigan Capital Region and formerly with Educational Foundation Consultants, will speak about his experience working with districts to establish or restart K-12 education foundations.  Here are some of the topics he plans to address…which interest you?

·        recruiting an involved and dynamic board

·        board organization; the benefits of a professional Executive Director

·        communicating your foundation’s message in your community

·        messaging around public education and the need for philanthropic dollars (Why aren't our tax dollars enough?)

·        differentiating foundations from other booster groups and PTAs in your district

·        How to establish or restart an annual appeal

·        How a contracted consultant can help an education foundation

If some of these topics interest you more than others, please let me know so that Rich can steer his presentation.  He’ll be with us from 11 am through lunch on 12/5.

I’ll send out a request for RSVP, along with the meeting agenda and lunch details two weeks prior.

Enjoy November,
