(Please re-post)

Dear Friends,

One particular day during this past month changed my life forever. My beautiful Rebecca was diagnosed with Lymphoma. We were truly shocked. I, for one, am still reeling, but as a parent of young children I am trying to stay as grounded and positive as I can.

We were concerned about a swollen lymph node that Rebecca ultimately had removed for biopsy. The young surgeon told us after the surgery just what we wanted to hear..."nothing to worry about, it looks fine." Five days later, we received the call. One of those calls that changes your life. Lymphoma had been found.

The past few weeks have been an emotional blurr. Despite this devastating news, we felt fortunate in relative terms as things progressed. Rebecca had strong ties to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society from her fund raising success a few years ago. You may remember her first triathlon for the LLS Team in Training. She had access to good advice right away. Thank you to Julie Hunter, Andrea, and her bike coach. Thank you to all of our friends who have already been so supportive. You helped us transition from being in shock to moving forward with a clear goal.

We proceeded through the steps of Pet scan appointment, Oncologist selection, Radiation doc selection, researching like crazy, second oncologist opinion, bone marrow biopsy appointment, nutritionist consultations, and trying to get some sleep once in a while.

Rebecca's diagnosis is Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. This is a slow moving cancer for which there is currently no cure. It is advised to disregard all guesses of life expectancy, but in reality, this has been hard for me to do. The thought of losing Rebecca is a devastating one. This is why I decided early on to help find a cure by raising money through the Team in Training charity. Essentially I have agreed to raise a minimum of $3,300 for LLS and to complete an Olympic triathlon in honor of Rebecca. I would like to raise at least this amount in the next two months.

Right now, Rebecca's PET scan and bone marrow biopsy show no signs of additional cancer. She will undergo radiation during the next two months and we hope this will eliminate any possible re-occurrence. There is a ~50/50 chance that by catching the cancer so early, removing the affected lymph node and having radiation Rebecca will be in remission from now on. However, just in case there is another episode, I want to help find a cure as soon as possible. LLS is making the most headway towards this goal and applies a large majority of the charitable donations they receive to research. Very little goes towards administration expenses, and donations are tax deductible.

Many people have asked how they can help. This is one way. Please make a donation today of any amount you can to show your support. Perhaps you also have loved ones who are fighting cancer. Please feel free to make a donation in their honor as well.
