| I really appreciate you bringing this up...I have been concerned all the years we have been at Cedarwood about this issue. It makes no sense to me to expect children to preform over the period of a long day with minimal nutrition, and I would think Waldorf teachers would understand the importance of nourishing the vital forces more than most...but I always felt like my appeals to our teacher to allow the students more time to eat fell on deaf ears. I know they have a busy schedule. Thanks, Barbara Lauer |
Christian,
Brilliant! I am all for it. How could we make a school-wide change like this?

So this article kinda slapped me upside the head with it's obvious and "simple" solution for this sort of problem:
http://www.doublex. com/blog/ xxfactor/ recess-makes- kids-hungry- healthy-lunch <http://www.doublex.com/blog/xxfactor/recess-makes-kids-hungry-healthy-lunch>
Basically putting lunch AFTER recess instead of before leads to kids eating more of their lunches (including the healthy parts). Other benefits: less food waste, possibly better behavior...other?
I don't know how such a move might impact the teaching schedule or how practical it would be to implement this change. But I thought I'd throw it out there as something to discuss, think about, research further maybe, and possibly implement if it makes sense (though I'm thinking next year... No need to rush. Maybe do a few test runs this year in a few classes if anybody's up for it... or not).

Christian,
I agree this is an idea that warrants a trial. My kids so often seem to bring most of their lunch back home and I wonder whether all that rushing in the morning to get so much lunch in the bag is worthwhile. The current system clearly is not great: it does not help the kids and also wastes a lot of food, which really upsets me since so many kids go hungry world over because of poverty.

I certainly would be in favor of the change! My kids seem to rarely finish their lunches, and my guess it is because they are so focused on getting out for recess. A slower paced lunch would be healthier for the child, and I would guess would also favorably effect the behavior.
