TGIF Rural Democrats!

Here's hoping everyone is taking every precaution to stay safe and hydrated in this blistering heat.

During the fair, a number of fair attendees asked about candidates. We were able to answer some questions but not all. With those conversations in mind, we decided to start a spreadsheet of candidates: Missouri Candidates 2023 - 2024 - Google Sheets. You can add candidates from your district. The only way we can stay informed, and help support local and state candidates is if we know who they are. We'll post the spreadsheet on our Facebook page as well.

Several newcomers (WELCOME!) that signed up for our newsletter asked how to become a member or to donate. Membership dues are $10.
You can use our ActBlue account: Missouri Democratic Party Rural Caucus — Donate via ActBlue or mail a check to: MDP Rural Caucus, P.O. Box 1541, Warsaw, MO 65355.

There is no excuse for this. More than 170,000 Missouri kids waiting for last summer’s food aid • Missouri Independent For over a year, the State has sat on $2 million in federal aid that can be spent as general revenue (never mind the $8 million in surplus) and they can't overcome "administrative hurdles".

Pres. Biden's Infrastructure Law strikes again! ‘The internet is no longer a luxury’: $667M from USDA for rural broadband • Missouri Independent MO will receive more than $75.9 million from two grants and one loan. Counties that will be big winners: Schuyler and Scotland (CD6), and Howell, Shannon and Texas (CD8). This funding will be a huge game changer for our rural communities. Remind your community that every single MO GOP U.S. representative as well as Josh Hawley voted against funding.

The Dept of Elementary and Secondary Education is seeking input on the newly proposed K-12 Learning Standards, Glossary, and Student Indicators for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). Proposed K-12 Learning Standards, Glossary, and Student Indicators for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)  Survey (surveymonkey.com) Comments will be compiled and shared at the October 16th State Board of Education meeting. Be sure to share!

It's interesting that Ashcroft cherry picks a small portion of ALA's Bill of Rights in his letter: Missouri Secretary of State withdraws support for American Library Association over faith-based publisher dispute (kttn.com) Friendly reminder...he completely dismissed their Bill of Rights when he implemented his administrative rule: Missouri libraries required to ban material deemed obscene (kmbc.com) Ashcroft said "...we want our children to be ‘children’ a little longer than a pervasive culture may often dictate..." but HEY...it's A-OK for a 12-year-old rape or incest victim to be considered old enough to have a baby.

Once again, AG Bailey refuses to perform the duties of his office, designating private attorneys, paid for by MO tax payers, to litigate "complex cases''. One "complex case" is against GOP State Senator Mike Cierpot's son for submitting false timesheets. That makes 3 cases that Bailey has "outsourced". What's a real hoot is the Republican Attorneys General Assoc. (RAGA) isn't backing Bailey: RAGA brass back a challenger to one of their own - POLITICO

Folks...This situation mirrors countless other disputes between animal agriculture facilities and rural neighbors. Southwest Missouri river’s listing as polluted may set up fight over meatpacker permit • Missouri Independent. Assessing accountability has gotten harder because the GOP state legislature has restricted rural counties/communities ability to set their own rules. Write the Dept. of Natural Resources and adamantly oppose the wastewater discharge: Report an Environmental Concern or Submit a Question | Missouri Department of Natural Resources (mo.gov)

Happy Friday, Rural Democrats!

There's a lot of news and events to share so grab your favorite drink and sit in your comfy chair.

The Missouri Democratic Party has opened the 2024 DNC Delegate Selection Process, a process for selecting Missouri delegates to attend the 2024 Democratic National Convention. The full Missouri Delegate Selection Plan, including public comment form, is available online here. Delegate Selection | Missouri Democrats

Celinda Lake with Lake Research Partners put together a presentation for the Missouri Democratic State Committee meeting last Saturday. LRP Presentation on Missouri 08.25.23 f - Google Slides Each slide has great information that we can use at the local level.

Six new initiative petitions filed w/the Missouri Secretary of State seek to add exceptions to the state’s abortion ban for rape, incest, fatal fetal abnormalities and the health/safety of the mother. New initiative petitions seek to add rape, incest exceptions to Missouri abortion law • Missouri Independent Three also lifted the ban until 12 weeks.

North Carolina has showcased the abortion effort in Missouri Not just Ohio: Biased language is the hot new tactic to thwart ballot measures | NC Newsline When states are looking at other states to see what to expect and what to prepare for, it's more important than ever to be a part of organizing and mobilizing: Abortion IP Organization/Mobilization - Google Sheets.

AG Bailey is not in control of his office. The Independent requested three days of the attorney general’s official calendar last week. A request that should take only a matter of days, Bailey’s office says the records won’t be made public until March 25, 2024. Pile of public records requests swells as Missouri AG works through stack from 2021 • Missouri Independent We need to boot him out of office!

Earlier this week, Gov. Parson signed Bill 103 into law. It clearly states that private information, like Social Security numbers and dates of birth, should be considered confidential and not available online. Guess what - Private info found in some records on Mo. court website (fox2now.com). Share with family and friends. Any person with a court case filed after July 1, 2023, should check their online court record and if their private information is open to the public, contact their attorney.

Folks, the Rural Caucus strategy is to build bridges in our rural communities - to dispel misconceptions/misinformation about the Democratic party and inform them of how the MO GOP has legislated against them for the past 15-20 years. We've learned there's two things that Missourians really look at: what hits them in their pocketbook (there's a lot) and reproductive health - not just abortion but the freedom for a woman to make autonomous decisions about her own body and reproductive functions. We are planning forums in 2024 that will be a little different in nature but will revolve around those two main issues. We want to have the forums in the districts on this spreadsheet: Missouri Candidates 2023 - 2024 - Google Sheets(please update if you have info!). We'll discuss this during our Sept. 10 virtual meeting.

During the Labor Day weekend, don't forget the American workers and the many, hard-fought achievements of our nation's labor movement: minimum wage, overtime pay, 5-day work week, paid time off, child labor protections and so much more.

TGIF Rural Democrats!

We are really excited that former South Dakota Senator Frank Kloucek (D) reached out in a show of support. He will be the guest speaker during our virtual meeting on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85271505126... Meeting ID: 852 7150 5126 Passcode: 770848  Here are the meeting minutes from July: 7.22.23 RC Meeting Minutes - Google Docs and the agenda: MDP Rural Caucus Agenda 23-9 - Google DocsMake plans to join us!

On Monday, Cole County Judge Beetem will hear the ACLU's arguments against Sec. of State Ashcroft's bad ballot language. Although Judge Beetem promised a swift ruling, we still have to deal with two other lawsuits. Regardless of the anti-abortion/anti-choice obstruction, we must be organized. If your club/committee/organization has organized and come up with a plan, let us know so we can help one another: Abortion IP Organization/Mobilization - Google Sheets. We've heard numerous times that counties need to "connect" - this is a good way to do it.

Here is a good write up on Missouri Democratic Party's plan on the 2024 caucus: Mail-in ballots, ranked-choice voting part of Missouri Democrat plan for presidential primary • Missouri Independent. If you missed it, you can read the plan and submit comments: Delegate Selection | Missouri Democrats

Folks, it isn't a big shocker that the MO GOP uses kids as a political punching bag and funding social services isn't a priority - it shows:  St. Louis-area has over 6,000 child abuse or neglect cases open | STLPR

Prepare for the finger pointing at Pres. Biden: Missouri gas prices could spike 50 cents to $1 higher in next few days (news-leader.com). Friendly reminder that OPEC announced plans in May to cut global crude oil output by one million barrels per day through 2023. Regardless, when gas prices go up, it affects everyone but for ranchers and farmers in our rural communities - that help put food on our table - any kind of gain they've seen is eaten away. This issue is going to be hard to overcome when talking to our rural neighbors but each one of us needs to be prepared to counter with facts.

If you haven't already heard, there are three new COVID variants and there's a big uptick in cases: Is masking coming back? As new COVID variants emerge, here's what experts say. - CBS News. Take every precaution the experts suggest. Just a thought...if my body-my choice people get angry when experts only suggest they start wearing a mask again to prevent the spread of a deadly disease, ask them if my body-my choice applies to women making decisions about their body, and on top of that, are they OK with women having to take a pregnancy test to travel between states. Let's turn this to our advantage.

There was so much information to share last week, we forgot to include: MO health agency removed sexual health, LGBTQ links from website | The Kansas City Star. The removed resources included links to sexual health providers in Missouri, LGBTQ youth groups and other groups that provide sexual health care information.

The Rural Caucus is a "Blue Sponsor" at The Truman Dinner, Wed., Oct. 4th Truman Dinner 2023 – Celebrating 10 Years of Truman. Happy Friday, Rural Democrats!

At midnight, United Auto Workers were forced to strike. Fifteen years ago, UAW agreed to large pay cuts when the industry was near collapse. Since then, the Big Three - GM, Ford and Chrysler (now owned by Stellantis) have recovered, earning large profits but not wanting to give the workers the compensation they deserve. Early this morning, the Rural Caucus Executive Board called UAW 2250 in Wentzville and asked how we can support them. They said food, water and showing up at the picket lines would be greatly appreciated. If you'd like to show your support and help, their address is: 1395 E. Pearce Blvd., Wentzville. Or if you'd like to call and voice your support: 636-327-5796.

During our meeting on Sunday, we introduced our 2024 Education Forum agenda which will be somewhat the same but with a twist. Based on the spreadsheet Missouri Candidates 2023 - 2024 - Google Sheets, we will have a forum and incorporate House and other candidates. Daniel Tracy added the awesome map so we can see (in dark blue) what House Districts have candidates. Because the candidates are rooted in local communities, it's the perfect opportunity to help the candidates running, increase public understanding of the election process and increase our visibility. All we need help with are venues that's available. We will be contacting candidates so we can start planning!

Our guest speaker during the meeting was former S.D. Sen. Frank Kloucek. He took the time to share some great ideas on what he did to flip his seat and how we can use his ideas in Missouri. Sen. Frank Kloucek Presentation 09092023 - Google Docs.

At the time of this writing, Judge Beetem hasn't ruled on the abortion ballot language. Cole County judge set to rule on wording of pro-abortion ballot petition initiative | St. Louis Record (stlrecord.com). Regardless of the outcome of his or other rulings we're waiting on, we must be organized! If your club/committee organization has come up with a plan, let us know so we can help one another: Abortion IP Organization/Mobilization - Google Sheets. You watch...as soon as we hit "send", he'll hand down his ruling.

Dig this folks...MO Congressman Jason Smith is on the committee to impeach Joe Biden over “family business” when Smith’s own mother is accused of running one of the dirtiest puppy mills in the state. Missouri passed The Puppy Cruelty Act and he gutted it. Nothing like protecting the "family business". This would be an excellent topic for a kick ass letter to the editor! Missouri Republican to help lead House impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden (yahoo.com)

The non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch ranked Missouri in the bottom third of all states for child rights Missouri lags behind most states for children’s rights, advocacy group finds • Missouri IndependentMissouri and 15 other states received an F grade. Eleven states improved since last year, but Missouri did not.

You might find this interesting. The Vernon County GOP are going to require people that want to run on the Republican ticket, answer a 2-page, 25 question form. Then they have to go through a vetting process to make sure they're "Republican enough" to have an (R) before they file. Vernon County News Article - Google DocsThey told the county clerk that a candidate cannot file unless they've gone through the vetting process. The Vernon County GOP is trying to build a coalition of other GOP county committees to do the same. This knowledge is an excellent LTE opportunity.

Rural Urban Bridge Initiative (RUBI) and Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) announced the joint release of the Rural New Deal - a detailed template for federal action to address rural America’s challenges and build lasting prosperity. Rural+New+Deal,+RUBI,+PDA.pdf (squarespace.com). It has great information so take the time to read it. Anthony Flaccavento, Co-Founder and Executive Director of RUBI will be our guest speaker in October!

The MDP Rural Caucus and the MDP LGBTQ+ Caucus are joining forces for a fun and wacky fundraiser "Let Them Eat Cake on a Frosted Runway", on Fri., Dec. 15. It's a spin on the "Fashion Week" catwalk with NClusion+ performing a drag show and helping auction off desserts. The money raised will benefit kids that would have less than a "Merry" Christmas. More details to come and be sure to save the date!

We're making some great connections, Rural Democrats!

In some way or another, we've connected and had conversations with grassroot rural Democrats in W. Virginia, Oregon, Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, Montana and S. Dakota - asking questions, brainstorming and trading state GOP horror stories. Each state may have different political dynamics but there's two things we all agree on:
  • Rural voters will be the driving force in winning elections.
  • Young rural voters are issue driven.
Some young rural voters are "joiners" but there's a whole lot that's not. They will vote for the candidate that aligns with the "issues" they believe in. The kind of information and connections we're making and in turn, sharing with our membership is exactly what we need to keep building on a rural coalition and flip seats! Which brings us to the next topic...

MDP Chair Russ Carnahan shared this article with us: Montana Democrats want to contest more local races : NPR and we found ourselves nodding as we read the article. "When you do not even have a presence, you don't even have a heartbeat in large swaths of a particular state, you're just on the way to a steep decline." We need to print off that one sentence, stick it on the fridge so we can read it umpteen times every day. It's epic.

The 2024 Candidate list Missouri Candidates 2023 - 2024 - Google Sheets is growing which is fantastic! We're working on the forum and what it needs or should look like. In a couple of weeks, we'll send out an informational email to all the candidates to give them our ideas and get feedback. If you have contact info on the hi-lighted candidates, please update the spreadsheet.

Because of unified Republican opposition and the defection of a crucial Senate Democrat (Manchin), the pandemic-era enhanced federal credit through Pres. Biden's American Rescue Plan, that lifted millions out of poverty expired in 2021As child poverty doubles, states launch or expand their own tax credits • Missouri Independent. Let's not forget that in July 2023, Gov. Parson turned down millions in federal food aid for low-income children Missouri has decided to turn down millions in federal food aid for low-income children (stltoday.com).

We must let our communities know the GOP is repeating the tactics of Nazi Germany: Missouri schools banned 333 books last year, 3rd highest in US: Report (news-leader.com). Folks..."Nazi Germany" may sound extreme but read their playbook: Nazi Propaganda and Censorship | Holocaust Encyclopedia (ushmm.org). Missouri libraries, schools and our marginalized communities - both rural and urban - are going to continue to bear the brunt of the GOP's well-organized attacks unless we push back and push back hard.

Case in point...this past week, after hearing a certain candidate (the one with all the indictments) blame "liberal Jews" for all of America's problems, GOP Sen. Bill Eigel who is running for MO governor, and MO GOP State Sen. Nick Schroer, used flamethrowers to torch a stack of boxes at a fundraising event: Republican candidate for Missouri governor vows to burn books | The Kansas City Star. Although Eigel and Schroer are boo-hooing about the blowback, the symbolism is stark.

TGIF Rural Democrats!

Where's Fall? We're ready for hoodies, crisp mornings, that wonderful autumn smell and of course, spectacular foliage. According to the forecast, it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer.

Let's keep up the steam and continue to support UAW #2250 with donations and, if you want, picket with them. If you decide to picket, be sure to sign in at the hall first: 1395 E. Pearce Blvd., Wentzville. A van will drive you to the picket line. UAW Vice President for General Motors Mike Booth had some interesting words: Trump’s Michigan visit: UAW VP for GM Mike Booth has strong words (freep.com).

A group of Nixa High School students have organized to fight against further book bans. 'It's not their library.' Here's some great information that can be used in a Letter to the Editor: Voter_Perceptions_of_Books_Bans_and_Censorship.pdf (nationbuilder.com)

As we all know, Judge Beetam struck down Ashcroft’s ballot language and rewrote it to reflect a more accurate and fair language.
Here is his judgement: Judgment Entered.PDF (mo.gov). The judge also struck down the GOP attempt to challenge and inflate the fiscal note, pushed by Sen Mary Elizabeth Coleman and Rep Hannah Kelly. Missouri judge rejects secretary of state's 'problematic' summary of abortion initiative petitions • Missouri Independent

And Ashcroft appealed: Appeals court sets hearing date on Missouri abortion rights initiative ballot title • Missouri Independent. The court set an expedited schedule for filings in the case.

Again, we're asking everyone to take advantage of the spreadsheet to organize: Abortion IP Organization/Mobilization - Google Sheets. It'll be important for each of us to know who we can contact for help or to offer help when we start collecting signatures. ICYMI...here is a map showing how many signatures are needed per Congressional Dist.: IP Signatures Needed - Google Docs.

A government shutdown might have unforeseen consequences in rural areas, especially ones that are heavily reliant on USDA funding. It's Government Shutdown Season (dailyyonder.com).

We put together facts about the Farm Bill for you to use/share in your meetings or events: Farm Bill 2023 - Google Docs. Print as is or copy/paste to your own flyer - it's up to you. We hope it's helpful.

Chair Joshua Dunne and VC Jacqueline Farr had a great virtual meeting with Kim Schmith, Oregon Rural Caucus Chair. She connected us with Kylie Oversen, former North Dakota Representative and part of the DNC Rural Council Steering Committee. She invited us to say a few words during the committee meeting in St. Louis. We're excited for the opportunity to share how our Caucus is active, motivated and Missouri rural is winnable!
