Cass County Democrats

Seems like the Cass Dems always have the hottest day to be in the Democratic booth at the Missouri State Fair! Thanks to Barb & JC Davis, Mary Jo Hackett, Kevin Rusnak, Patty & Jerry Johnson, Cindy Voss, and Denise Wiskur for weathering the heat and representing Cass County on Saturday, and thanks to the whole crew who joined in the parade on the 10th with the Pettis County Democrats!

NOTE TIME & LOCATION - Join us at 6:30 pm to visit and/or eat pizza in the Van Buren Room at the Harrisonville Recreation Center

At 7:00 pm we'll have our committee meeting which will include a discussion of our candidate recruitment program "Talk to 4 for 2024, an update on the petition to return Abortion Rights in Missouri, and a look at the upcoming events where we still need volunteers.

We'll provide the pizza, water, and lemonade. If you'd like to bring a dessert, that would be great!

Update on the ongoing attacks on our Cass County Public Library!

For those who don't know the story, the Cass County Commissioners have been steadily replacing qualified library board members with completely unqualified political appointments! This led to some pretty public fights, and publicity last year when they tried to have a book removed from one section of the library to another, this failed. However, with the appointment of a 3rd highly unqualified member, this is now back on their agenda and worse.

  •  At the August 16 meeting, three of the five-member Board voted to roll back the tax rate in opposition to the maximum certified by the state auditor and the recommendation of the library director. In addition, the actions of these three members included setting aside the 59.96% vote in favor of Prop L in favor of the 40.04% opposed to Proposition L and portrayed their overturning of the election and the majority vote of the voters as respecting and looking out for the taxpayers! These series of actions will result in a loss of $203,00 for the 2024 budget. If these three members had followed the recommendations of the state auditor and the library director as well as honored the vote of Cass Countians there would have been a $412,213 increase in the 2024 budget.
  • In addition, at the August 16th meeting, one member attempted to push through a policy to shelve/move to a “special” location within the library any number of materials based on “sexual content.” The categories listed in her proposed policy included books on puberty and menstruation. This proposal was accompanied by remarks that appeared to express outrage by this member that her personal parental oversight beliefs were not being enforced by the current library policy. By the Board president’s own words, these three members had already seen the proposal. The other two members had only received a copy late at night no more than a few days before the meeting if not the night before the meeting and the Board’s own attorney, who thankfully was there, said he had not seen it at all prior to that night even though the Board president put forth a narrative that attempted to create the appearance that the attorney had seen the proposed policy prior to the meeting.

What can you do?

Start by attending the Board work session on Wednesday, August 30 at 4:45 P.M. at Pearson Hall in Harrisonville. The public isn't allowed to comment at the work session, but the three in question need to know they are being seen, and the others need to know they have our support!

Plan to attend the Cass County Public Library Board meetings on the third Wednesday of each month at 4:45 P.M. in Pearson Hall on the upper floor of the library building in Harrisonville. Get there early, sign up to speak, and show support for library board members who are fighting to keep politics out of our public libraries!

UPCOMING EVENTS

Bring the family to the 7th Annual 4th District Picnic! The 4th District committee has rented the main shelter at Harry S. Truman State Park outside Warsaw, MO on Sunday, October 1st. Bring a side dish and your table service. We'll provide meat and drinks.

ALL the Statewide candidates have been invited to speak at this event. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet these candidates up close and personal.  Candidate speeches, play some horseshoes, fish, and let the kids enjoy the playground. Let's have some fun with friends and family as we enter the most important part of this election cycle.

We'll eat at Noon with candidate speeches and games to follow.

LAST CHANCE - We still need survey responses.

Under the age of 50? Please take our survey

Please share with anyone in Cass County that's under the age of 50 too!

Your opinion matters – take our survey! | khou.com

ATTENTION - YOUNG DEMOCRATS

And for the purpose of this survey, young is anyone under the age of 50.

If you've noticed the Cass County Democrats in parades and booths around Cass County, you've probably also noticed that the majority of us who regularly volunteer are over the age of 50 (thus why we've chosen under 50 to take this survey).

We need help! We were barely able to staff a booth at Summerfest from Noon to 8:00 pm for one day. In the last election, we were only able to get 4 candidates to run. What are we doing wrong? What can we do better?

We KNOW that a whole lot of you care, but we can't turn Cass County blue without volunteers and candidates!

If you are under the age of 50, please take this survey. You can answer anonymously if you'd like, we really want honest answers! If you know someone under 50 here in Cass that isn't in this group, please share this link with them. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8TW92C6

If you have any comments, questions, or concerns to send our way, please know you can do this at any time to: cassde...@gmail.com

Thank you!

We have a new fundraising plan and part of that plan includes being able to give money to our candidates in 2024 after they file (barring a Primary). It's hard to start a campaign and we want to give enough for our candidates to get off to a good start. This plan depends on all of us "budgeting for Democracy". Have you paid your 2023 annual dues? Have you thought about a recurring monthly donation? If everyone reading this email would give $5.00 a month, we'd be well on our way to reaching our goal for our candidates in 2024! Donate to the Cass County Democrats

We know political change takes people working together. It takes people contributing their time, talent, and treasure to make it happen. We on the Cass County Central Democratic Committee ask you to give available time, share your unique talents, and give generously to create a different and better world for all people in our county and our state. To fund our ongoing work for the change we ask you to pay 2023 annual dues of $25.00. If you can give more, that is appreciated. Please let us know if you want to give for a specific reason or to support a particular cause. You can donate from our homepage www.casscountydemocrats.com.

Thank you for all you do and all you give to make this world a better place.
