Happy Friday, Rural Democrats!

Hats off to all the volunteers at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) meeting! We received a lot of great feedback stating Missouri volunteers set the bar high. If you are interested in volunteering for the 2024 DNC Convention, here's the form: Volunteer Interest Form - Chicago DNC 2024 (chicago2024.com)

During the DNC meeting, Josh and Jacqueline were on the roster of guest speakers during the Rural Steering Council meeting. Our idea of a Community Forum that revolves around MO State candidates was of particular interest to several out-of-state participants. There was a lot of business card swappin' going on. We also met the Rural Steering Council Midwest representative, Edgar Pando. To be honest, we didn't know one existed! Given the time constraints at the meeting, we weren't able to talk to Edgar in depth about his plans but we've already emailed him about a Zoom meeting.

One presenter during the meeting was Isaac Wright with the Rural Voter Institute About — Rural Voter InstituteJacqueline asked for a copy of his presentation to share with our membership but she hasn't heard back yet. He was kind of mixing "morals" messaging with "values" messaging which we don't necessarily agree with but again, with the time constraints, we weren't able to have a solid conversation and ask questions. Some broad strokes from our notes:
  1. Narrative Development: A communication strategy that is based on an emotionally engaging narrative on core values.
  2. Brand design: Not just a logo but a great visual brand that communicates your message clearly and consistently.
  3. Website/Social Media: Simple messaging that should tell your story effectively and activates supporters.
  4. Direct Mail: Keep pushing brand and enhance your message.
  5. Don't make promises you can't keep. Let voters know what you stand for, let them know how your opponent has worked against their best interest and how you'll work for the common good.
  6. Try to have a project manager - someone you trust and who will give honest, brutal feedback. If you're thin-skinned, you won't make it.
The Rural Caucus now has VAN access to information for the whole state. Our plan is to use VAN to find those registered voters that didn't vote and send out invites to the Community Forums. We'll coordinate with the candidates, clubs and committees. With the help from Alex with the House Democratic Committee Campaign, we're working on the candidate spreadsheet Missouri Candidates 2023 - 2024 - Google Sheets and Daniel Tracy will work on the map to give us a terrific visual.

The DNC has adopted a Land Acknowledgement statement before meetings. Land Acknowledgement is a formal statement that recognizes and respects Indigenous Peoples as the original stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories. The Rural Caucus Executive Board proposes to do the same.

The next virtual MDP Rural Caucus meeting is Sat., Oct. 21, 2 p.m. We're excited that our guest speaker will be Rural Urban Bridge Initiative (RUBI) co-founder and executive director Anthony Flaccavento.

It's unfortunate that we're seeing fissures within the Democratic Party when it comes to Israel. Regardless of their position/statements, we must remember the innocent civilians - men, women and children - as the death toll continues to rise. Of course, this horse's ass can't be anything other than...well...a horse's ass: Josh Hawley Offers World’s Most Offensive Idea for How to Help Israel | The New Republic

You can read the whole article to see how senators have asked for money (earmarks) to benefit their state but the bottom line is Hawley and Schmitt asked for zero money for Missouri - investment money that could benefit rural community projectsGenerational shift ushers in new era for Senate earmarks split - Roll Call. Before he retired, Blunt asked for $362.4 million a year ago in earmarks. This is the 3rd year Hawley didn't ask for earmarks. Hawley and now Schmitt are not invested in Missourians.
