Hi All,

I did some sound for an installation in an outdoor place with no
mains power some time ago and used 4 mp3 players with mini powered
speakers for the sound (it didn't need to be hi fi!). They were 2
ipod shuffles and 2 others - I forget what, they weren't mine. So I
used some of the capabilities of the players - some set to loop and
some set to shuffle.

Now the installation is to be re-made for an internal gallery space
where there is power and I can use decent loudspeakers. It would be
good to be able to use a Mac or PC for the sound.

Can anyone direct me at mp3 player emulators for Mac or PC - so that
I can loop and shuffle the same playlists and send out on 4 separate
mono outputs to 4 powered loudspeakers?

In the old days I guess I'd've used 4 small CD players connected
direct to the speakers - and I may still do that!! But it would be
good to do it from something that the gallery staff can turn down in
one movement if they get bored and the gallery is empty.

Please don't tell me I can do it in Max MSP - any time I have got
after sorting the playback system quickly will almost certainly be
needed to refine the sound itself for playback over better speakers
in a semi-formal indoor environment. (It was in a windswept barn -
it's going into an art gallery!!)

Cheers,

Lisa

hi lisa,

you are aware, that you´ll need a solution which runs 4 mp3 playlists independently (you didn´t mention if they were synchronized or not, but from your tech list i gather they were rather not).
and a 4 channel audio interface.
of course you could use a cheap audio program like amadeus pro (good to have that anyway), which can output 4 channels and line up your tracks there and have them loop. but they wlll always be synchronized the same way.
or create a 4 channel audio file in audacity and export it as a multitrack, then play it back over vlc player, in which you can create a playlist that starts automatically, when the computer starts.

but, the most flexible and reliable solution will be max/msp, i am afraid to say. and the patch you´ll need is so easy and straightforward to put together, that you could ask a student to do it for you…

hope this helps
