Description
The Newcomb Department of Music in the School of Liberal Arts at Tulane University is hiring an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) with a specialization in music and technology. We are seeking a candidate with extensive knowledge of contemporary music production, recording techniques, digital sound technologies, and a critical understanding of the history and practice of music technology.

An active research agenda should inform both creative practice and a record of publication. The successful candidate will collaborate on the continued development of the Music and Technology BFA and participate in the design and development of a potential new MFA while working alongside our faculty in other areas. The position has a start date of July 1, 2026.

The Newcomb Department of Music features faculty with expertise in performance, composition, music and technology, musicology, ethnomusicology, Black American music, and musical theater. The Department of Music is experiencing significant growth, with the music and technology area being particularly popular with students.

This expansion in the Music and Technology area creates promising opportunities for collaboration within the department and with other developing areas in the School of Liberal Arts, such as Digital Arts, Digital Media, and the Strategy, Leadership and Analytics Minor.

Our curricular track in the creative industries helps connect students to the next generation of careers in the arts. The renowned New Orleans music scene provides unparalleled opportunities for real-world engagement with world class performers and diverse musical communities.

This is a tenure-track position. Tulane is an R1 research institution and successful tenure is dependent on nationally recognized scholarship and/or nationally recognized creative output/performance informed by research. The successful candidate will be a scholar or a scholar-artist with an active research/creative production/performance portfolio.

Responsibilities include:

• Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in music technology with a 2-2 load. Classes may include but are not limited to digital production and sound recording, history of electronic and computer music, introduction to acoustics, sound design, digital music ensemble, interactive media, and sound studies.

• Supervising student projects and internships.

• Developing and maintaining an innovative research, publication and creative agenda.

• Working with faculty and administration in the Department of Music to continue the development of the BFA in Music and Technology and the potential design of a new MFA in the area.

• Working with faculty and administration in the Department of Music and the University to continue a shared interdisciplinary discussion on music and technology.

• Participate in service activities at the departmental, school, and university levels.

• Collaborate in the supervision and maintenance of the Department of Music’s music and technology facilities and equipment.

Qualifications

• PhD or DMA with a focus on music and technology.

• Experience with some of the following: electronic music composition, sound design, interactive media, AI.

• Experience with programming languages and software development for musical applications.

• Experience with acoustics and audio signal processing.

• Teaching experience in higher education or equivalent professional training experience

• Active engagement with current emerging technologies in music and critical trends in the research on the topic.
