Dear List

I hope you are all well and resisting as much as possible the collective madness that seems to have taken over large parts of the globe?

The point of this email: my colleague Christine North and I have revised our 2009 translation of Michel Chion’s ‘Guide des objets sonores’. Some of you might know it? Chion has been very supportive and has generously given permission for me to disseminate this revised translation as I see fit - hence this email. Those who know the ‘Guide’ will see many quotations from Schaeffer’s ‘Traité des objets musicaux’. In our 2009 translation these were obviously no longer consistent with our 2017 translation of the ‘Traité’. Therefore, we felt we had to update these quotations and produce a revised version. As part of this process we also added a new Preface by Michel Chion and a short note explaining our system for referencing page numbers. I wanted to ensure readers could refer both to the original ‘Traité’ in French and our English translation. This is now possible. In all other respects the revised version follows the example of the 2009 version: the Guide has been translated in its entirety. The pdf download is, of course, free.

You are very welcome to download the pdf (it’s only 4MB) at this link:

Can I ask one favour? If anyone notices a typo or any other error can you please let me know (off-list of course)? I will correct it as soon as I can. Now I’ve retired from university I have time on my hands! Probably too much time according to my wife…but that’s another story.

Once again, I’d like to express our sincere gratitude to Michel Chion for allowing us to revise and disseminate this important work. Along with the ‘Traité’ it remains the best introduction to Schaeffer’s theoretical framework and his vocabulary.

Keep well everyone,

John Dack

Dear John (and Christine)

Thanks for this, I think many of us have benefited from this mammoth work you have done… in the case of Schaeffer, many times the translation is clearer than the original :D As for Chion’s it is great that now both translations have the same quotes.

I hope you enjoy your post-academia years.
