Hello,

My name is Nicola Giannini, and I am a postdoctoral fellow in research-creation at UQAM and McGill University. It is my great pleasure to invite you to take part in On marche dans cette pièce, an immersive and participatory sound performance, which you could co-create. In this performance, inspired by Alvin Lucier’s classic I’m Sitting in a Room, you will make the space resonate with your words and sound gestures.

Dates

·       January 14, 2026 – 7:00 p.m. – Fully booked

·       January 15, 2026 – 7:00 p.m. – Some places available

Location

·       Hexagram Experimentation Room, Pavillon des Sciences Biologiques (UQAM), 4th floor, rooms SB-4125 - SB-4105, 141 President Kennedy Ave., Montreal.

Schedule

·       7:00 p.m. – Preparatory workshop: presentation of the project, the technological system and some creative techniques that can be used during the performance.

·       7:30 p.m. – Performance: together with the other participants, you will be invited to walk in the space while reading a text in French - as in a sort of choral karaoke of experimental music - and to create sounds by improvising with percussion instruments and everyday objects. Your sounds will create an immersive sonic space through a spatial reinjection system.

·       8:00 p.m. - Survey: you will be invited to share your impressions of your sense of immersion in the experience. 

·       8:15 p.m. – Question-and-answer session (optional participation): you will be able to ask questions about this project and share your impressions.

Recording: the performance will be filmed, audio-recorded, photographed, and notes will be taken for research, documentation, and public dissemination. 

This project has been approved by the Comité institutionnel d’éthique de la recherche avec des êtres humains (CIEREH) of the UQAM and is funded by the FRQSC. The project is supervised by Philippe-Aubert Gauthier (UQAM) and Catherine Guastavino (McGill University), carried out as part of a Hexagram residency, and benefits from the support of CIRMMT.

Déroulement

·       19h - Atelier préparatoire : présentation du projet, du dispositif technologique et de quelques techniques de création utilisables pendant la performance.

·       19h30 - Performance : avec les autres personnes participantes, vous serez invité·e à marcher dans l’espace tout en lisant un texte en français – comme dans une sorte de karaoké choral de musique expérimentale – et à créer du son en improvisant avec des percussions et des objets du quotidien mis à votre disposition. Vos sons créeront un espace sonore immersif grâce à un système de réinjection spatiale.

·       20h - Questionnaire : vous serez invité·e à partager vos impressions sur votre sensation d’immersion dans l'expérience. 

·       20h15 – Période de questions-réponses (participation facultative) : vous pourrez poser des questions sur ce projet et partager vos impressions.

Captation : la performance sera filmée, enregistrée sur support sonore, photographiée et des notes seront prises à des fins de recherche, de documentation et de diffusion publique. 

Mon projet de recherche-création est approuvé par le Comité institutionnel d’éthique de la recherche avec des êtres humains (CIEREH) de l’UQAM. Il est financé par le FRQSC et est supervisé par Philippe-Aubert Gauthier (UQAM) et Catherine Guastavino (Université McGill).
