The degrees embrace the data-rich world in which we live and channel those informational streams through creative and critical thought with the intent of propelling excellence in artistic expression. We welcome risk-takers who wish to work in this emerging
musical world and invest deeply in new artistic creations. Coursework may include data-driven instrumental performance, musical performance networks, computer music composition, interface and instrumental design, and data sonification.
Supporting our efforts in these new expressive realms is a comprehensive School of Music and Dance that offers courses in choreographic and performance studies in dance, music education, music performance, composition, conducting, jazz studies, music theory,
musicology, ethnomusicology, music history, and music technology. The Music Technology area has excellent studio facilities for creative exploration and educational attainment.
Faculty research interests are exciting and broad, including electroacoustic performance and composition, design and fabrication of digital musical instruments, environmental sustainability, data-body interactivity, site-specific sound, interdisciplinary collaborations,
and the exploration of memories, emotions, and personal experiences as the driving forces for creativity.
The faculty’s creative scholarship has resulted in the production of original electroacoustic music, compact discs, video DVDs, books, and National Science
Foundation grants. Presentations of the faculty’s work has occurred around the world including major electroacoustic and new media festivals, such as the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC), the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States
Conference (SEAMUS), the Musicacoustica Festival in Beijing, the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, the Kyma International Sound Symposium (KISS), the Seoul International Computer Music Festival, and the International Conference for New Interfaces
for Musical Expression (NIME). In addition, the faculty’s work has been presented in such diverse venues as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Pompidou Center in Paris, and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
We believe that knowledge cultivated in these programs will position individuals to successfully compete for professional, research, and academic opportunities.
