Hi Guys,

I totally forgot about this group for a while. Been really busy for the past 2-3 months or so - work/project, helping out on my girlfriend's business, passing away of my grandma, wedding preparations and a whole bunch of stuff... I apologize for initiating this and leaving you out in the dark.

Anyway, I initially thought of making a JUG for Cebu since in my years on the field I haven't seen a Java group in Cebu that's active enough to have gatherings, trainings or even just simple meetings to say "hi" to our fellow programmers. One reason for this is that we lack the place/facility and the funding for such a meeting. Of course, being Filipino there should always be snacks. And I think most, if not all of you would agree with this.

So after talking to my boss regarding this matter, he offered the place and the funding so that we can make this group a little active. The place/facility would be either the Global Gateway office in i1 building or the Exist office in i2 building. Of course, I'm not expecting great food or lechon but at least it's free! We're also free to use any of the equipments for presentations. There's no catch here. Since Exist is promoting Open Source Software, I think it's part of its responsibility to train people with it. And thus, we have been given this opportunity.

Anyway, we can also meet in other venues if someone has other suggestions. This is not limited and not handled by Exist. This group should be free from influence of any company. Java is now Open Source and so is any other JUG too. :)

So... To start off our little group, I would suggest we meet up soon. Anyone can volunteer to present anything as long as it's Java related. Since it would be hard to ask anyone for their free time, I'm suggesting either we meet on a Saturday morning/afternoon or a weekday evening. Please do reply if you're interested in joining so that I can ask for snacks funding. :) Also post in the time which is convenient for you to have the meeting.

Hopefully some of the snacks are low carbs, low cholesterol. Some of
us
have to undo decades of investment in bad health (search: metabolic
syndrome, prediabetes). Software is a sedentary job :(

Until recently, Java wasn't fully open source. Perhaps our little
group
can focus on what is the difference now that it is, and help make
something
happen in our favorite here and now.

I'm not volunteering to present, but I could talk for a few minutes
about
what happened at the end of the 1st Cebu Open Source Summit recently,
where there was a proposal to organize some kind of national
organization
(discussion at http://groups.google.com/group/ph-foss?hl=en, look for
the list of 11 reasons why this might be worth doing).

As an agendum, I'd suggest inventorying what Open Source projects have
local contributors/committers. Maybe we can organize some mentoring
for wanabees.
