Professor Oiva Toikka one of Finland's most famous glass artists. His work dates back to the 1950's but is still as popular today. He is most well known for his Birds by Toikka series which took flight in 1972

Our birds are mouth-blown by master glassblowers. To make these unique creations, glassblowers inflate molten glass using a blowpipe. The glassblower then begins to shape and form the bird. This step is repeated many times throughout the process and additional steps are taken when adding multiple colors, patterns, and shapes. The major tools used by a glassblower are the blowpipe (or blow tube), punty (or punty rod, pontil, or mandrel), bench, marver, blocks, jacks, paddles, tweezers, newspaper pads, and a variety of shears.

I splurged on the Blue Charadrius 2023 Annual Bird as a remembrance of my late husband who died the last week of 2023. Blue was his favorite color, and he was an avid outdoorsman. We collected iittalia Toikka birds sporadically throughout our marriage, and enjoyed displaying them in one of our favorite rooms. No regrets! The Blue Charadrius is a lovely addition and will carry special sentiment to me in the years ahead.

I love the speckled salmon mother bird, and it pairs perfectly with the salmon baby bird. I can imagine how when the clear baby grows up, it would acquire the spots. I really appreciate how quickly the order was shipped, and how carefully the bird was packed for shipping.
