New Metro to connect SoBo to Thane
Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday said in the Legislative Assembly that it has plans of setting up a new metro rail project connecting South Mumbai and Thane. He indicated that the feasibility of the plan had been worked out and the government is ready to take it up.
Mr Chavan was replying to the calling attention motion by Shiv Sena legislators Pratap Sarnaik, Eknath Shinde and others.
“A majority of the working class is residing in Thane and needs to travel to Mumbai daily. In view of this, a plan to set up 11 km-long metro rail line connecting Wadala-Ghatkopar-Mulund-Anandnagar-Teen Haath Naka-Ghodbunder is under active consideration,” Mr Chavan said.
The CM informed the lower House that the detailed project report (DPR) had been prepared. It would be taken up for discussion and may get approved in the next meeting of the MMRDA. Following this, the project report would be sent to the Centre for final approval.
Mr Chavan said, “The estimated cost of the project is `3,271 crore and it is not viable on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis. So, the government has decided to start the project on a new financial model. The Centre and state would give a share of 20 per cent each, the concerned municipal corporation has to give 10 per cent share, while the rest 50 per cent amount could be raised through loans.”
