The Middle East Institute presents:
"Israel's Improbable Allies: Christian Zionism and its Strategic
Consequences for the United States, Israel and the Palestinians"
With, Célia Belin, research scholar at the Middle East Institute of
the School of International and Public Affairs, at Columbia
University.
The role of Christian Zionism in determining US foreign policy towards
Israel has rarely been studied. Christian Zionists hold dear the
belief that the land of Israel belong to the Jews. With the political
awakening of the Christian Right in the United States from the 1980s
on, the religious movement has become a strong political voice,
substantially influencing US foreign policy on the matter. Christian
Zionists are dedicated to support and defend the Jewish state almost
entirely regardless of the international consequences of the
unresolved Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The religious fervor deployed
by these Christians regarding the Holy Land is so fierce that it would
be a mistake to fail to take it into account when assessing chances
for peace in the Near East.
Célia Belin is a visiting research scholar at the Middle East
Institute, at Columbia University. For the past two years she was a
Guest Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. Belin is
pursuing a PhD in Political Science & International Relations at the
Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris, France).
