I have thousands of photos that have yet to have key words assigned to
them. I need to be able to easily group and present thumbnails when
they're requested by a wide variety of outside sources. Should I
keyword them in Bridge, or Portfolio? Why? (I have Portfolio 8.1, but
haven't used it much).

dave -

i thought the question was worded differently before, but here are my
thoughts on the difference. bridge only deals with files that are
located on an attached drive, where portfolio can catalog a cd (or
dvd) and make reference to it.

bridge can edit the metadata (which stays with the image), but i
honestly don't know if portfolio can do that (or only applies tags to
it in portfolio)

personally, i use bridge when i am laying things out, but when i am
organizing my tens of thousands of photos, i use aperture (lightroom
is similar) because i can make minor tweaks (cropping, etc.) right in
the program without harming the originals.

hope that helps.

Dave,

we don't normally get such a perfect alignment of question and meeting
topics but did you notice the topic for the April meeting? Here's the
short description:

Demystifying Digital Asset Management
Date: 4/29/2010

Speaker(s):Shellie L. Hall Technical Solutions Evangelist. Extensis.

Digital Asset Management is a great way to get digital documents
organized so that you can find exactly what you are looking for when
you need it. That sounds easy enough, but where do you begin? This
session will take you through the ins and out of D.A.M. and give you
some valuable insight on how to get started and how to implement a
solution to fit your needs. We will also unravel the mysteries of
metadata, and use Extensis Portfolio to build a basic D.A.M. workflow.

See http://www.cdpug.org/meetings.aspx?id=223 for full details.

It does Mark. Thanks. I guess if I go with Bridge (which is what my
heart wants to do) I'll need to figure out a way for Bridge to direct
me to the right storage discs... But even if I do that, I'd still
have to open those discs to see info that Portfolio would have on hand
without having to install and open the storage discs). Maybe
Portfolio is the way to go... drat! I like using Bridge (I kind of
feel like Bridge is a permanent, built-in, part of the team). I find
Portfolio to be less user-friendly, and just another thing to accept
into the fold. That probably makes no sense. Oh well, you know me!

Thanks

Figures! It’s the perfect meeting at the perfect time... and I can’t
make it that night :-(

Will I always receive emailed responses to my questions (in addition
to what shows up on the Forum page?) Other Forums I’ve tried didn’t
send an email, so I’d get tired of checking back. Sometimes even
forget where the Forum was, and never end up seeing my responses.

I hope CDPUGers latch on to using this. I’ll do what I can to help.
Maybe throw some more questions out there, and look for questions I
can respond to...

Thanks,
Dave
