Apress

May Newsletter

It’s official—the .NET 4 platform has finally arrived. Apress was in Las Vegas this past month as Microsoft unveiled the new VS and Silverlight 4. We have a solid lineup of books that will guide you through the new features of .NET 4, including the award-winning Pro C# 2010 and the .NET 4 Platform by Andrew Troelsen. If you’re heading to the Microsoft Tech Ed conference in New Orleans at the beginning of June, be sure to stop by the Apress booth to see our latest .NET 4 titles.

However, May is more than Microsoft. Besides making headlines over a run-in between German beer and an absentminded iPhone software engineer, Apple continues to redefine the mobile development arena with the iPad. It’s time that you join in on the fun—iPhone and iPad Apps for Absolute Beginners and Beginning iPhone Games Development will help you do just that. And if you’re a Flash developer who happens to be in New York City next week, we’re offering $25 off the registration price of Flash and the City, the premier Flash conference taking place in Apress’ own backyard. Read below for details!

Conference News and Notes:

360|iDev April 11th -14th

iPhone developers turned out in the highest numbers to date for the third 360|iDev conference at the eBay Town Hall in San Jose, CA this April. Apress was a proud sponsor of 360|iDev, which brought together approximately 300 iPhone and iPad developers from around the world to talk, share, meet, and learn. 360|iDev offered yet another unforgettable line-up of speakers and opportunity to network with the best and the brightest in the iPhone development community. We were excited to see so many Apress authors together leading informative and engaging sessions.

The four day conference included a comprehensive program of panels and 40 different presentations separated into four different tracks (Hands-On; Business of iPhone; Sights, Sounds, and Interactions; Development Tips and Tricks) along with 360|iDev’s exceptional 12 hour, overnight Touch Arcade Game Jam. Significant topics abuzz at 360|iDev included the recent changes in the iPhone OS developer agreement, the forthcoming iPhone OS 4.0, improving user experience, and an impressive mix of both technical and business issues.

We just can’t wait until September 2010 when 360|iDev will be back again!

VS Launch April 12th -14th

Las Vegas was the place to be in April for Microsoft developers. On April 12, Bob Muglia, President of Microsoft's Server and Tools Business, introduced Visual Studio 2010 during his keynote address at the Bellagio Hotel. The announcement was followed by three days of sessions lead by the best speakers in the industry, covering the latest and greatest Microsoft technologies, including Visual Studio 2010, Silverlight, WPF, WF, WCF, .NET 4, ASP.NET 4.0, AJAX, ASP.NET MVC, and much more. On day two of the event, Scott Guthrie, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's .NET Developer Platform, introduced Silverlight 4. Guthrie demonstrated how Silverlight can help companies design, develop, and deliver engaging, interactive applications for the Web, desktop, and mobile devices. Readers and authors like Rockford Lhotka stopped by the Apress booth to check out the first of our .NET 4 titles, which included Pro WPF in C# 2010: Windows Presentation Foundation in .NET 4 by Matthew Macdonald and Accelerated C# 2010 by Trey Nash. In June Microsoft will move on to New Orleans, LA for its annual Tech Ed North America conference. Visit us at booth 2633 to see the latest Apress titles following the official VS 2010 announcement.
