I’m having email issues. Apologies if this is a duplicate.

 

We don’t have public-facing documentation up yet for our version of CDL (still hashing out PDF accessibility issues in the Alma viewer, among other things) but here is a draft FAQ entry that I have sent/paraphrased in reply to instructor inquiries:

 

What are Digital Reserves?  

Digital reserves are texts from the Libraries’ print collection that have been converted to electronic format (scanned using ABBYY FineReader OCR) and made available via OneSearch and the Library Resources tab on Canvas.  

Western Libraries doesn’t currently offer a 2-hour loan for physical reserves, but when possible we are converting texts to digital reserves, much like an in-house version of Hathi Trust. Students can borrow digital copies one chapter at a time, for two hours, with unlimited renewals and an email-based waitlist that notifies them when the item is available if checked out. In line with best practices for controlled digital lending, there are no download or print privileges available and the print text is not allowed to circulate.  

Not every title is eligible for digitization due to licensing, copyright or technical limitations, and each request for print reserves will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. In the interest of improved access and convenience, Western Libraries will default to digital reserves or licensed ebooks whenever possible.
