Presentation:
The Semantic Web and Java:
The Semantic Web leverages the well-known WWW infrastructure while
changing some of its underlying philosophy of use. The human-centric
web focuses on static mapping, navigable "space" as well as human
interpretation and interaction with self-describing documents. The
semantic web focuses on machine processable information, data
conversion, declarative statements and data relationships. The
semantic web alters the way in which data is organized and expressed.
Further, it makes the use of inferencing a central feature of the
environment. During the presentation we will look at the core features
of the semantic web including data representation using RDF, RDFS and
OWL. The concepts of open world and non-unique assumptions will be
discussed. We will then investigate the current standard for querying
semantic data called SPARQL. Finally, a Java framework for working
with semantic data (Jena) and a Java-based OWL reasoner (Pellet) will
be described and demonstrated. All of the source code for the
demonstration will be available for download.

About the Presenter:
David Read is CTO of Blue Slate Solutions and leads the company’s
technology consulting team, helping determine functional requirements,
platforms, products, integration approaches, architectures, QA
procedures and implementation processes, primarily within healthcare
and financial services. Blue Slate focuses on effective integration
and construction of secure and reliable service-oriented systems,
including appropriately leveraging each client’s existing systems and
architecture investments. Dave provides leadership surrounding data
security, including encryption, protocols, policies and processes for
multiple healthcare and insurance clients. He is also involved in
speaking engagements and education at forums such as the PCIAA, an IT
conference for Property and Casualty Insurers, and the Business Rules
Forum. His expertise extends to significant data mining experience,
and he is currently working on projects to leverage semantic Web
concepts as a path to improve data reusability and integration
approaches. Prior to joining Blue Slate, Dave had 15 years of IT
leadership experience, including various positions within GE, where he
was a lead architect for many diverse Web-based applications focusing
on a scalable and standards-based infrastructure. The success of these
applications led to his receiving GE’s Internet Pioneer of the Year
award. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems
from the College of Saint Rose.
