It's a pleasure to be here on the first day of a real winter in New York. New York hasn't really changed, though, I've noticed. I got out of a cab this morning and a typical New York bum walked up to me and said, 'May I have five dollars for a cup of coffee?' I have lived here for a couple of years while going to school and teaching here. It seemed to me the prices used to be lower, and I said, 'Isn't five dollars an awful lot for a cup of coffee?' And the fellow said, 'Well, you know, the money supply's been growing over 14 percent. That's M1B.' I said, 'Really?' and he said, 'Yes, and the wages rates have been up an average level of about 11 percent, and it's been very difficult for us out here on the street.' I said to this fellow, 'Well, if you know all of this, why don't you become an economist?' With that he reared back, stiffened up, looked me square in the eye and said, 'Sir, I still have some pride left.'

C'est un plaisir d'être ici au premier jour d'un véritable hiver à New York. New York n'a pas véritablement changé, cependant, il me semble. Je suis sorti d'un taxi ce matin et un clochard new yorkais typique est venu vers moi et m'a dit 'Est-ce que je pourrais avoir cinq dollars pour un café ?' Et il poursuit 'Oui, et le salaire moyen est monté d'environ 11%, et c'est devenu très dur pour nous dans la rue.' J'ai dit au type, 'Ecoutez, avec toutes vos connaissances, pourquoi ne devenez-vous pas économiste ?' A ces mots il a reculé en se raidissant, m'a regardé droit dans les yeux et m'a dit 'Monsieur, il me reste encore un peu de fierté.'
