The liberal democracy is an artificial environment, carefully crafted to both contain human nature and convert it into an engine of progress. When we grow up within an artificial habitat that values human inventions like reason and fairness and humanity, it can be easy to forget just how tenuous that environment is. It’s easy to forget that we’re living in a rare anomaly within human history—an anomaly held up only by trust, cultural norms, and shared assumptions. It’s easy to become overconfident in the stability and permanence of that environment and forget that the worst of human nature is always lurking just beneath the surface. But the reality is that a liberal democracy is a human construct, held in place not only by laws but by the “support beam” of liberal norms—shared notions of what is and isn’t tolerable or harmful and by shared determination to uphold those standards. When that support beam weakens, the environment can quickly collapse.

La démocratie libérale est un environnement artificiel, soigneusement conçu pour à la fois contenir la nature humaine et la convertir en un moteur de progrès. Lorsque nous grandissons au sein d'un milieu artificiel qui privilégie des inventions humaines comme la raison, l'équité et l'humanité, il est facile d'oublier à quel point un tel environnement est précaire. Il est facile d'oublier que nous vivons dans une anomalie rare dans l'histoire humaine — une anomalie seulement soutenue par la confiance, les normes culturelles et des postulats communs. Il est facile de devenir exagérément confiant dans la stabilité et la permanence de cet environnement et d'oublier que le pire de la nature humaine est toujours aux aguets juste sous la surface. Mais la réalité est qu'une démocratie libérale est une construction humaine, maintenue en place non seulement par des lois, mais aussi par la "poutre maîtresse" de normes libérales—des notions partagées de ce qui est et n'est pas tolérable ou néfaste et la détermination partagée de préserver ces standards. Quand cette poutre maîtresse s'affaiblit, l'environnement peut rapidement s'effondrer.
