To be happy at home is the end of all human endeavor. The sun looks down on nothing half so good as a household laughing together over a meal, or two friends talking over a pint of beer, or a person alone reading a book that interests them; and all economics, politics, laws, armies, and institutions, are only valuable in so far as they prolong and multiply such scenes.

Etre heureux à la maison est la finalité de tout effort humain. Le soleil ne brille sur rien d'aussi bon qu'une maisonnée riant ensemble lors d'un repas, ou de deux amis discutant autour d'une pinte de bière, ou d'une personne seule lisant un livre intéressant ; et toute l'économie, la politique, les lois, les armées et les institutions n'ont de valeur que dans la mesure où elles favorisent et multiplient de telles scènes.
