The history of information networks has always involved maintaining a balance between truth and order. Just as sacrificing truth for the sake of order comes with a cost, so does sacrificing order for truth. Scientific institutions have been able to afford their strong self-correcting mechanisms because they leave the difficult job of preserving the social order to other institutions.

L'histoire des réseaux d'information a toujours impliqué le maintien d'un équilibre entre la vérité et l'ordre. Si sacrifier la vérité au service de l'ordre a un coût, sacrifier l'ordre au nom de la vérité en a un également. Les institutions scientifiques ont pu se permettre leur puissants mécanismes d'auto-correction parce qu'elles ont laissé le difficile travail de la maintien de l'ordre social à d'autres institutions.
