Hi All,

I have some good news and some bad news regarding TSSLD certification.

The New York State Education department is changing the requirements as of May 1, 2014. If you will be applying for TSSLD certification after May 1st of next year, these changes will affect you.

The Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST) and the Assessment of Teaching Skills – Written (ATS-W) will no longer be required. Instead, you will be required to pass the “Educating All Students” Test (EAS) as well as the “Academic Literacy Skills Test” (ALST). In addition, you may also be required to complete a  “Teacher Performance Assessment” (TPA) portfolio. This would require a 20-minute video of you conducting a session or sessions. I am still researching the exact details of this TPA portfolio. I will keep you posted.

The good news is if you completed a “psychology” course, it may fulfill the “Special Education” requirement. In the past, it was my understanding that “psychology” courses were not acceptable. However, if you have completed a course that you feel may fulfill the requirement, please e-mail a course description of your course (as detailed as possible) so I can determine if the course meets the stated requirements.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi DD,

I am going to forward this email to everyone if you don't mind as many of the students claimed that they did not get your last email with all the documents you attached. Also, just to make sure... if we apply and have the certificate by graduation then we are "grandfathered" into TSSLD and do not need to do any of the new requirements?

Best,
Nikki Bonica

Hi Professor DiCristofaro,

Here is the Intro to Psychology course I took back in 2002 at Berkeley College in White Plains, NY. Does this fulfill the Special Education course requirement for TSSLD certification. The description is brief on their website.

4 Credit Hours48 Clock Hours

An introduction to the basic principles of psychology and their direct application to the understanding of human behavior. Topics include human development, learning, memory, thinking, intelligence, creativity, motivation, emotion, adjustment, perception, abnormal behavior, and therapy.

Thanks,
Daisy Mejia
