Hello all,

I'm not sure how many people are familiar with Google Groups or not,
but just wanted to let you all know that if you don't want to have to
come to the actual Groups site each time to see posts or responses,
you can edit your settings to have posts/replies go directly to your
email inbox. That way, you can read posts and reply directly from your
own email account.

So, don't be shy - ask away! :)

Thanks Ms. Folowoshele!

I am very excited to apply to the Hubert Global Health Fellowship in
2012. Is there anything we should be preparing right now before the
application cycle begins?

I am currently working on getting my letters of recommendation
together, I'm not sure if there is anything else I need to be doing
though.

Sincerely,

Ali Ahmad

Ali,

Thanks for your question! In terms of preparation, there isn't much you can do now in terms of gaining additional experiences/education before the application period so I suggest you start thinking about the 2 portions of the application that have the most weight - the personal statement and letters of recommendation. On the application there will be specific questions to answer, so you won't be able to complete your personal statement right now, but start to put together a draft outlining your experiences and why you're interested in this fellowship as well as international work in general.
In terms of your recommendation letters, be sure to think of and ask some people that truly know you and the work you've done/experiences you've had. The worst thing you could do would be to wait to the last minute to ask just anyone that will in turn simply give us a resume dump and could potentially miss the deadline post mark date. We'd hate for you to not be  considered because of the latter, and we can always read right through the former. So choose people that know you, ask them on time, and be sure to follow-up with them about when they mailed (not _will_ mail) your recommendation letter early next year.

Hope this helps! :)

I am exciting to apply for the 2012 fellowship and was wondering where do we find out more information about past projects that fellowship recipients have worked on?

For the alumni and current fellows:

1) How was this experience received on the residency interview trail? I assume most people doing this experience are already into incorporating public health with medicine and are interviewing at similarly minded residency programs.

2) How supportive was your med school about the research time as an elective? Were you able to receive non-clinical credit? Any major problems with the logistics involved in scheduling it?

Hi Patrick--

I'm a Hubert alumnus from 2009-2010, Pneumonia in Thailand.

1) First off, you probably should pick the project that looks interesting, not that will get the best residency application.  That probably goes without saying.  But the Hubert did come up in several of my interviews.  Mostly it's because interviewers are so desperate for something to ask you about, they latch on to anything that they haven't seen before.  In my case, despite a lot of research in other areas, the Thailand experience was the flashiest thing, so it was frequently asked about, even though it didn't have a lot of overlap with my residency program.

That said, anything unusual will probably serve the same function, so do what interests you most.

2) I chewed up all my non-clinical electives on this project.  Schools vary in regards to how permissive they are towards any outside curricular activities.  If they pack your year with tons of senior-level clinicals, then you're probably SOL.  But if you have a lot of say in the shape of your schedule, then usually they will relent.

From your email, I see that you're at OHSU, which has frustrated people before with trying to get time off for research.  If you expect resistance, it helps to have a faculty advocate who will go to bat for you.

Good luck!

Hello Patrick,

My involvement with the CDC-Hubert Global Health program was received
positively during interviews. I was able to talk about my drive to
pursue public health efforts and meet with specific faculty during my
interviews who had similar interests, which made for excellent
interviews. I am currently a pathology resident (which I believe is
less represented in the international health arena than most fields)
and felt that programs viewed this interest as an asset to their
program. So far, my program is encouraging me to continue my
involvement with international health.

Fitting the fellowship in during my fourth year of medical school was
tricky, but doable. I did not take any vacation during my third year
because I knew I wanted to have some flexibility for this fellowship,
if I was selected to participate. Interviews generally take place in
the fall and early winter (my interviews were October through
December) and I completed my fellowship during March and April.
Fortunately, I was able to count this fellowship towards my elective
credits. Given the presitigous nature of this program, I felt that my
medical school worked with me to make it happen. The only downside is
that I wish I would have been able to spend a longer time in Kenya (12
weeks instead of 8).

Good luck!

Hi,

My name is Kimmie Pringle and I'm currently a PGY3 Resident in
Emergency Medicine. I went to Jefferson Medical College in Philly.

1. This is a prestigious fellowship, and came up frequently in my
interviews, but in the aspect of epidemiology based in the ED and
public health related to the ED. Public health and international
medicines are one of my passions. I think if this is truly one of
your passions, it sets you a part from other applicants. It shows you
like research. It shows you're organized. It's a prestigious
fellowship. I think the importance of the fellowship depends on the
program you're applying to. I can't speak for other specialties, but
in EM there is a big difference between academic and community
programs. The fellowship clearly would resonate with an academic
program, because they are more research focused than community
programs. For a community program it would probably hold some weight
but not as much as an academic place.

2. I worked on nosocomial surveillance in Egypt. It was awesome. I
learned a ton. I think applying to this program you have to be
flexible. The projects that are proposed are not always the projects
you will work on -- due to IRBs, MoHs etc, but you're bound to have a
good experience.

3. My medical school was very flexible, but I also had saved my
vacation knowing that I wanted to do the program. Your school should
help you achieve your goal... med school isn't cheap, and this is a
great opportunity for you... and you make your school look good when
you do stuff like this. Volunteer to give a talk when you get back,
right something for the med school magazine etc if you run in to
problems. This should count as a research elective.

Smiles,
Kimmie

Hi Ms. Folowshele,

I was taking a look at the instruction sheet for the letter of recommendation and I noticed that the cover letter is from Dr. Larry Cohen but the second page recommends mailing the letter to your attention.  Do you know if the letter of recommendation should be addressed to Dr. Cohen or to you?

Thanks for your help!

Ali,

Thanks for your question. The recommender can address the letter to Dr. Cohen if he/she'd like and address the mail to my attention (as I collect all application materials). Both of us read all recommendation letters so really it doesn't matter to whom it is addressed.

Hope that helps!
