Thanks for your question. The recommender can address the letter to Dr. Cohen if he/she'd like and address the mail to my attention (as I collect all application materials). Both of us read all recommendation letters so really it doesn't matter to whom it is addressed.

1. This is a prestigious fellowship, and came up frequently in my
interviews, but in the aspect of epidemiology based in the ED and
public health related to the ED. Public health and international
medicines are one of my passions. I think if this is truly one of
your passions, it sets you a part from other applicants. It shows you
like research. It shows you're organized. It's a prestigious
fellowship. I think the importance of the fellowship depends on the
program you're applying to. I can't speak for other specialties, but
in EM there is a big difference between academic and community
programs. The fellowship clearly would resonate with an academic
program, because they are more research focused than community
programs. For a community program it would probably hold some weight
but not as much as an academic place.
2. I worked on nosocomial surveillance in Egypt. It was awesome. I
learned a ton. I think applying to this program you have to be
flexible. The projects that are proposed are not always the projects
you will work on -- due to IRBs, MoHs etc, but you're bound to have a
good experience.
3. My medical school was very flexible, but I also had saved my
vacation knowing that I wanted to do the program. Your school should
help you achieve your goal... med school isn't cheap, and this is a
great opportunity for you... and you make your school look good when
you do stuff like this. Volunteer to give a talk when you get back,
right something for the med school magazine etc if you run in to
problems. This should count as a research elective.

Catherine Folowoshele Program Coordinator
fellowship! Our fellows work mainly in Africa, Asia, and South America
so the short answer is yes! Within Africa projects have been in Kenya,
Egypt, Botswana, Ethiopia, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of
Congo. We also have a project in Nigeria for the first time this year.
I'll list out some of the titles below so you'll get an idea of what
the projects entailed - but I hope some of the alums and current
fellows respond detailing a bit about their experiences! :)
This year we've had 1 fellow in the DRC already and 2 are currently in
Kenya.

Program — Ethiopia & Cameroon
- Surveillance System for Acute Respiratory Infection — Egypt
- Hospital Acquired Infections — Egypt
- Pathogen Discovery on Lyssaviruses and Other Emerging Zoonotic
Pathogens — Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Descriptive Analysis of HIV/AIDS — Nigeria
