I am a veterinary student with a great drive to do public health work, specifically emerging and zoonotic diseases.  However, I currently lack much experience.  Do I bother applying for this fellowship?  I have a global health project/experience starting after the application due date.

Thank you!

Shannon,

Do not be discouraged, I surely think you should apply! A lot of times people think they have to have worked abroad for years in all types of capacities to be highly considered but that is not the case. Domestic work experience or volunteer work (with or without immigrant communities) counts as well since it shows interest/motivation. More importantly, the personal statement and letters of recommendation hold a lot more weight than the experience "on paper" so with your "great drive to do public health work," I'm sure you'll write a stellar personal statement. Just be sure to be honest and descriptive while of course answering the questions we ask to cover on the personal statement. Further, if you're sure to find recommenders who know you well, they will be able to accurately echo your passion. These should make for a strong application. Good luck! :)

Shannon,

If it's something that interests you, then apply. The answer is
always no, unless you give it a shot.

Sounds like you're passionate about public health and vets have a
unique and different perspective than MDs. I'm not sure Erica Dueger
is able to have a fellow this year given the turmoil in Egypt, but
she's a DVM and awesome to work with! As long as you bring energy,
enthusiasm and a positive attitude to the job, you're going to be an
asset to the team.

Smiles,
Kimmie

Thanks Kimmie for your great responses!! Just to speak to the Erica Deuger portion (for those unaware, she is the Supervisor for the Egypt projects we usually have each year) she actually did submit a project for this year. Unfortunately (we're speculating) due to the fact that there was turmoil going on in Egypt around the time people were applying for this current year's fellowship in Jan-Feb 2011), the Egypt project wasn't matched this year for the first time in a couple of years. But fortunately things have since calmed down in Egypt and Erica (and her teammates) have returned to Egypt. We're sure she will submit a project proposal again this year (received in December 2011) so keep a lookout for it during the next application cycle opening January 2012 for the 2012-2013 class!

Enjoy your weekend everyone,
Catherine
