Patients can get infections in the hospital while they are being treated for something else. On any given day, about one in 31 hospital patients has at least one healthcare-associated infection. One of the ways germs that cause these infections can spread in healthcare settings is from patient to patient on the unclean hands of healthcare personnel.

Janet Glowitz, PhD, RN is an infection preventionist and Hand Hygiene Subject Matter Expert at CDC.
