If I understand correctly, Packt gives away a free e-book every day. You have to create an account with them and then you can add whatever free book they're giving out to your account (which also then gets you 50% off if you later decide to buy a hard-copy). This week they are giving out books related to game development, with the current one being on scripting with the Unity game engine. They will have a new one in about 5 hours.

For those of you taking Java, the free e-book for the next 16 hours is "LibGDX Game Development by Example", LibGDX being a framework for Java that allows you to create cross-platform games (to include for Android and iOS).

Today, 6hrs left?

Android 3.0 Application Development Cookbook

Who this book is for

If you are new to Android application development and looking for a quick start, or if you are an experienced Android developer looking for a reference guide, then this book is for you. Ideally, you should know some Java and a little about mark-up languages but this is by no means necessary. This book will teach you how to write rich Android applications from scratch in no time.

It looks like Packt is no longer offering their ebooks for free or discontinuing their free elearning program and moving to a subscription based service with their mapt program.

I've tried my best to check in everyday and claiming my free ebook everyday.  There were a few books that were offered on more than one day.

I've put up my collection of Packt eBooks in my CCSF Google drive account.  If anyone is interested in getting a copy for themselves from my drive please private message me with your CCSF email address and I'll your address to the shared group.  Please, only CCSF email addresses at the moment.

If anyone else has been building their collection and can share that would be nice because there are a few days that I had forgotten to check in and claim my book.

Packt publishing offered books ranging from penetration testing, to big data, python, java, and many other languages for developers.

If you see a book that you're interested in please double check for a corresponding Code Files .zip for the sample code files that are in the ebook.

It's unfortunate the program has ended.

Thanks, Alan!

Everyone, don't forget that a SF Public Library card gets you free, if limited, access to 'Safari (Tech) Books Online' (only items published in the last 2 calendar years...so in January, only 14 months of material will be available [items published in 2017 + 2016]).

Select:

eLibrary > eBooks > Computing and IT Books (Safari Techbooks Online)

...and login with your library card & pin.

Lots of great technical books,

Katherine

To everyone that I've added to the shared folder please forgive me for the notifications every time I added someone.  I'll prevent that from happening in the future.
