Intern at a YC company:

Here are screenshots of the application sections that I took:

This is something for advanced students, particularly those with experience from hackathons, other internships, or previous work in software development.

Particularly, the questions in the “Culture” section are slanted…for example, the “Which kind of culture would you prefer in your next job?” question pretty much requires an answer of “Fast-paced and exciting” to be considered by startups.

Under the “Career” section, they ask “What size company would you like to work at?” Previous guest speakers have said that any company under 100 people will be unable to hand-hold (a.k.a. provide a structured learning experience for) interns. Under that number of employees, you should be able to independently solve problems for them.

Still a great opportunity for more advanced students, and something to work towards for students earlier on the learning path.

Another guest speaker recommended looking for companies that just closed their Series A funding round, which can be searched on Cruchbase.com (7 day free trial for the necessary Pro account). He recommended just after closing Series A funding since companies will have just promised their funders that they would meet aggressive targets & thus will be on a hiring spree to make this happen. He recommended researching these companies, and then reaching out to the ones that you are excited about with personalized emails showing that you understand them. They're so small that there aren't really getting cold contacts yet, so have a high likelihood of responding (assuming that you are a ready-to-go addition, with skills who can solve problems for them right from day one).
