The fate of many stalwarts who have been continuously winning ward
elections for several terms will be decided through lots. Only one
woman has won elections to a ward in the history of SCB.
Of the total eight wards, one will be reserved for the Scheduled Caste
community candidates and the remaining seven would go into draw of
lots, of which three would be reserved for women. The Centre on
Tuesday issued the gazette notification asking the SCB to conduct draw
of lots and reserve three wards for women, in accordance with the new
Cantonment Act.
Elections to the eight wards of SCB are likely to be held early next
year as the Centre has asked the SCB to publish final rolls of voters
list by January 3, 2008.
Informed sources told this correspondent that the notification for
elections is likely to be issued in the first or second week of
January, 2008, after which elections should be conducted to eight
wards in SCB within 40 days.
