The Bill gives more power to the vice-president of the board, who is
elected directly by the people
HYDERABAD: It is expected that the Cantonment Bill, 2020, would come
into force from March next year, once it is passed by Parliament, and
the residents of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB), are eagerly
looking forward to its implementation.
“The Bill gives more power to the vice-president of the board, who is
elected directly by the people. Unlike previous terms, where the vice
president was elected by the ward members,” J. Rama Krishna, former
vice-president of the board, told this newspaper.
As per the Bill, “In every board, there shall be a vice-president
elected directly by all the electors in the cantonment in accordance
with such procedure as the Central government may, by rules,
prescribe.”
That is not all, the vice-president will have the power to preside
over meetings of the board and when so, to exercise the authority of
the president.
“Also, in the absence of the president, the new rules say that the
vice-president would be empowered to perform any other duty and
exercise any other power of the president also he would be able to
perform any duty of the president which may be delegated to him,” said
Sanjay Vashist, a resident of West Marredpally.
