I did this ride last year, and it was very well done. Loved the Apache helicopter flyover at the start, the food at the end was great. Anyone else interested in doing it? One note…chip seal in some sections of the ride.

Subject: 2008 Independence Ride - Registration open

Registration is now open for the Independence Ride, November 15th, 2008

The Schlumberger Cycling Club (SCC), together with our ride partners, the ConocoPhillips Cycling Club and the Chevron Cycling Club, are hosting the 2nd annual "Independence Ride" in support of disabled veterans. The 2007 Independence Ride was a tremendous success, raising over $60K for the Independence Fund.   Thank you for your participation in 2007.

The 2008 Ride:
This year's ride will be bigger and even better. The Independence Ride is a fully supported ride that will start and finish at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Wallis, TX, approximately 40 miles west of Houston. The Independence Ride will consist of three routes with lengths of 23, 44, and 63 miles. Rider check-in will begin at 6:30AM, with opening ceremonies beginning at 8:00AM.

Mission & Goal:
Our goal is three-fold. 1). To raise money to assist with the purchase of equipment, such as an iBot wheelchair, or hand-crank bike, to enhance the independence and mobility of disabled veterans. 2). To have disabled veterans participate in the ride with us to provide them an athletic opportunity outside of their current environment that will enhance their physical and emotional well-being. 3). To provide a safe and enjoyable cycling event for riders.

To learn more about the 2007 ride and how much it meant to the veterans, go to Link and click on “How the Proceeds are Spent” at the top of the page. There you can view the video from the 2007 ride and see how the funds are spent to support veteran’s needs.

Registration:
Riders can register in advance through the Registration link on the ride website, or through Active.com Link. Registration fee is $35.

We are requesting that participating riders, and anyone wanting to help with this worthy cause, make a donation of your choosing directly to the Independence Fund. Our recommended minimum donation is $30/rider. Donate when you register through Active.com, or donate at check-in on the day of the ride. Donating early will help us to bring in more disabled veterans from out of town.

Festivities & Opportunities for Participation:
Once again, we are planning for an Apache helicopter to flyover the ride start and to be on display throughout the morning. Come on out and join in the excitement. Be prepared to meet some exceptional veterans that will open your mind and fill your heart with their courage.

Nashville recording artist, Stephen Cochrane, a singer-songwriter and proud veteran, Link , will be on hand to entertain following the ride, beginning at 11:00am. The Knights of Columbus will be cooking up some good post-ride food and drink for all participants.

We will have veterans participating in the ride on bikes, hand-crank cycles and tandem bikes. We are looking for cyclists willing to ride with the veteran riders on the Short (23 miles) and Medium (42 miles). We will also need many volunteers to help with set-up/tear-down, traffic control, and SAG support. If you are interested, or know someone who may be interested in volunteering for this very worthy cause, please contact the Ride Director, Charlie Johnson, john...@slb.com

Independence Fund:
100%
of the money raised from the event will be donated to the Independence Fund, a 501(c)3 non-profit tax-deductible charity, with the mission of providing disabled veterans with the tools and assistance that they otherwise are not receiving, and to fund and promote physical and leisure/athletic activities that enhance the veteran’s physical and emotional well-being.
