Hello all
I've been working with the sister of/ex-girlfriend of/possible owner of Jane and Jason (white pit mixes FKA Clutch and Sampson) Tess Schreffler. The dogs were well enough cared for but left in a local rental house for about 3 months. Tess was going in to feed them once daily so maintains she did not abandon them. The local police and property owner say otherwise and brought them to PAWS last Thursday. I gave Tess several days (until last night at 6:30) to come up with the funds to reimburse us for medical expenses and find a place where they can go. She was unable to meet these requirements and keeps asking for one more day so I've taken the final hard line that they are up for adoption. Through talking with her I've found there have been multiple past owners of these dogs. I expect we will be contacted by any number of them. Our response to them all needs to be that they were deemed legally abandoned by local police. The matter in question is abandonment, not ownership, as we are aware they have had numerous owners over the years. Anyone interested in the dogs must simply come in and apply and must meet our normal adoption requirements. Having said that, there are several people who are not permitted to see the dogs. This is because I believe they do not have a safe place for the dogs to go and it would upset the dogs to see them as visitors And I believe they may literally attempt to steal the dogs. Those people are Tess or Megan Schreffler, Bethani Bloom, and Eddy Lewis. Their pictures will be posted at the front desk for reference. This info will go to our front desk, SL, AC, and publicity team.
Additionally, we need to unfortunately expect any or all of these folks to be verbally abusive and therefore be prepared to tell them we will not tolerate or communicate with them while they are verbally abusive. While I expect any communications will all be via the phone, anyone who is not cooperative in person can and should be asked to leave. Get a staff person if needed and call the police if needed.
Thanks
Lisa
