at 3 p.m. on Feb 7, 2018 (Wednesday)
Room.No. 2, 1st Floor, New Academic Block, EFL University
Abstract: This talk will be based on the recently released book titled Ground Down by Growth: Tribe, Caste, Class and Inequality in 21st Century India (London: Pluto Press). It was written by a team of anthropologists (including the speaker) at the London School of Economics. They conducted a three-year research project on inequality and poverty in contemporary India, including a year spent doing fieldwork in predominantly rural areas of five different States (Telangana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Himachal Pradesh). The focus of the book is on Dalits and Adivasis as it tries to explain why these historically disadvantaged groups remain at the bottom of the economic and social hierarchy in spite of the country’s rapid growth to which they are contributing through their labour. The conjugated oppression of caste, class and gender is at the centre of the argument, which is empirically grounded in detailed ethnographies of power relations and capitalist exploitation in various Indian settings.
Dr Dalel Benbabaali is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Oxford (School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies).
