The Open Insulin and Real Vegan Cheese projects are currently both focusing on protein expression in the industrial yeast Pichia pastoris. However much of the research infrastructure around Pichia is subject to various patents and licenses. A group in Belgium is developing a completely open source set of tools to get around that, which could be really useful for our own projects!

We'll be doing a journal club this Monday, 7pm PST, on the OPENPichia project. Here is the link to the paper:


If you can read the paper in advance and contribute to the discussion, that would be great. Or if you just want to show up and listen, that's fine too.

I will certainly share the news.
Yann and Louise who started off with the CCL Open Insulin group and then went on to found chapters in Baltimore and France are currently focusing on developing an open pichia strain for production as well.

Hi Payrick! 

I just dropped off some samples of hen egg fluid which may have some recimbinantly made insulin for testing.

I am wondering if anyone is interested on some cell culture media? I have many litrs but it needs to be kept at 4c
