Dear partners,

Assemblymember Bonta is authoring AB 40, the Community First Coal Review Act, to protect West Oakland and communities along California’s rail corridors from the health impacts of coal. We are writing to ask your organization to submit a letter of support.

The timeline is short. AB 40 is set to be heard in the Senate Environmental Quality Committee on Wednesday, June 24. To be reflected in the committee analysis, support letters should be submitted by Wednesday, June 17 at 12:00 p.m.

We have provided a support letter template you can place on your organization’s letterhead and adapt to your organization’s mission, along with a fact sheet for additional background.

Letters should be submitted through the Legislature’s position-letter portal:

Submission steps:

1. Create or log into your account.
2. Select “Submit a Letter.”
3. Enter AB 40.
4. Select the organization or client you are submitting on behalf of.
5. Select the Senate Environmental Quality Committee as the recipient.
6. Indicate your position as “Support.”
7. Upload your signed support letter, preferably on organizational letterhead.
8. Review and submit.

Please also feel free to share this request, the template letter, and the fact sheet with partner organizations, community groups, and other networks that may be interested in supporting AB 40.
