NEEDED:   RESEARCH ASSOCIATES FOR A REMOTE AREA
STUDY WITH “DAIS” (THE JEEVA PROJECT)

Context:  A 3-year research study, with 2 years of intensive field work, to document the practices of traditional birth attendants (“dais”) in 4 remote rural areas in India: in Bokaro district (Jharkhand), Bellary district (Karnataka), Nandurbar district (Maharashtra) and Kangra district (Himachal Pradesh).

Requirement:  Eight “Research Associates” (RAs), one Junior RA and one Senior RA for each site.

Qualifications (mandatory):  The candidates must be women. All should be sensitive to general socio-economic issues and aware of the diversity of cultural frameworks in the region and country.  

 

Junior Research Associate

Senior Research Associate

1.    Academic degree in health sciences, women’s studies, sociology, anthropology.    

BA with research experience,
or MA / MSW

MA / MSW with relevant research experience, or MPhil

2.    Field research experience
in sociology, anthropology, health sciences, etc.

1 year or more of supervised research   

2 years or more of independent research, with understanding of tools and methodology

3.    Language skills

     a) English

Ability to communicate in and follow basic English when called upon to do so.

Ability to write, speak and translate accurately into English, with good reading grasp and accuracy in typing.

b) Regional language (Hindi,Marathi,Kannada)

Ability to speak, read, take fluent accurate notes, and to write up observations, field reports, etc.

Ability to speak, read, write, and translate into English retaining the sense of original language. 

4.   Computer skills

Basics: can use MS Word, Excel, internet and email.  

In addition to basics, experience software for data analysis, either quantitative or qualitative. 

5.   Team-building attributes

Experience of working in a team.

Experience in guiding a team.

For either or both Junior or Senior RA candidates, the following attributes will be appreciated:

  • Fluency in a secondary language of the area (e.g. Telugu, Bangla, local dialect)
    and prior familiarity with the particular culture, dialect and people. 
  • Ability to type in Hindi, Kannada or Marathi (with few mistakes).

Expectations:

  • The selected candidates will give full attendance in the training when the project starts (mid-2010) and they should commit themselves to the full two years of field-work. 
  • In each site, the Senior RA will be responsible for coordinating the local team. Both Junior and Senior RA will work together with two locally recruited field assistants and will co-ordinate with the partner organisation in the area.
  • The RAs will stay together at the research site in accommodation which is appropriate and feasible for women to stay.

Remuneration:

Monthly consolidated to Junior RA is Rs.18,000; to Senior RA is Rs.22,000. Accommodation is covered; standard DA / TA applies during trips for project meetings, off-site trainings etc.

Opportunity:

The project will give the Research Associates an opportunity to experience rural social dynamics, develop research skills and work with a team of multidisciplinary researchers.
