I was living in Nepal in 2015 when a magnitude 7.6 earthquake rocked Kathmandu and the surrounding area. This was followed by a second large earthquake about a month later.
I will never forget the devastation, fear, chaos and stress that these earthquakes caused. But alongside the loss, many people I spoke to were able to testify that numerous lives had been saved because of training they had received in the years before the earthquake, and preparations they had made.
This edition of Footsteps focuses on how we can build resilience so that when there is a hazardous event – such as a storm, flood, drought or earthquake – we are better able to cope with the impacts, reducing the risk of disaster.
Read this edition to explore:
- what we can do to help prevent disasters from happening
- the role of disaster management committees
- basic first aid techniques for use in emergency situations
