Dear Colleagues,
We hope that the new year is treating you well.
We are happy to announce that the final version of the summary from the Localizing Humanitarian Response Forum in Sri Lanka is now available. It can be downloaded below
|
|
The summary highlights specific examples of local faith actor engagement in humanitarian response and provides recommendations. It should be used as a resource for examples of engagement and a source of information for future actions and advocacy. For more detailed information on case studies and documentation supporting presentations at the forum please see here.
Thanks to Olivia Wilkinson, the coordinating editor, as well as the rapporteurs and copy editors.

Since the forum:
- We have revamped the website to post-Forum mode and evidence base populated with supporting documents.
- Communications materials including videos, photos, and PowerPoint presentation are being edited and developed. A short video on LFAs and Humanitarian Response has been commissioned for March 2018 delivery.
- The Advocacy Working Group is active, co-chaired by Arne Naess-Holm, Norwegian Church Aid, on behalf of Act Alliance, and Amjad Saleem in his private capacity. The AWG met on December 18th to sign off on the Call to Action and to develop the plan for specific advocacy activities. Please review the Call to Action and share with your colleagues and networks.

Advocacy
Advocacy efforts since the forum continue apace.
- The first advocacy presentation on engaging Local Faith Actors in Humanitarian Response was made by Abid Gulzar from World Vision on behalf of the Forum group to the ICVA meeting in Bangkok in December. Abid’s presentation can be found here.
- At the UNHCR High Commissioner’s Dialogue in Geneva in December, the role of faith and religion was highlighted by Dr. Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh, JLI Refugee and Forced Migration Hub Co-Chair.
- Sheikha Bola Usman of the Federation of Muslim Women of Nigeria has joined with Sheikh Musa Bamba of the Liberian IRC and with Rev Joseph of Gambia to form a West African league to build on lessons learned in Sri Lanka.
- The All India Disaster Mitigation Institute has expressed interest in providing disaster preparedness and risk management support to local faith actors in South Asia.

It is critical for us to maintain momentum so we encourage you to share reports on upcoming events, including internal activities such as briefings of colleagues. We kindly request that you flag any opportunities for advocacy that lie ahead. Please use the website as a resource for materials and information, but also a platform to let the AWG know what additional support you may need for advocacy — presentations, research, speakers etc.
JLI is continuing its role in evidence management and dissemination as well as carrying forward research and a broad evidence agenda on religion and development. In support of the results from the Sri Lanka Forum, the JLI will help strengthen and disseminate the evidence about LFA engagement in humanitarian response and support the AWG.
If you have updates, questions or would like to join the AWG, please email Olivia Wilkinson (oli...@jliflc.com).
