Hello All,
For those who were unable to attend last week's Global Health Council webinar "
Practicality over Panic: What Happens if PEPFAR is not Reauthorized". The recording of the conversation is available through this
LINK.
Generally speaking, even if PEPFAR is not Reauthorized this calendar year, the program will continue to function as it is a permanent fixture of the US Department of State. Funding for PEPFAR (and the Global Fund) were steady in both House and Senate Appropriations bills for FY24 so programs will continue (however some individual programs could be affected as the Congressional provision of 10% of PEPFAR funding going to orphans and vulnerable children is no longer a mandate due to the lapse in reauthorization-that spending is entirely up to the discretion of the Global AIDS Coordinator Amb. Nkengasong).
The deeper concern is how this could make other global health programs vulnerable to partisan fights moving forward. These are among the concerns CCIH and partners have highlighted with House and Senate offices about the need to reauthorize PEPFAR.
Additionally, here are some of the resources referenced during the discussion:
If there are any questions or more information would be helpful, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Thanks!
