Dear CLIP Families,
The Silicon Valley Asian Art Center (SVAAC) has an extra special exhibition this month (from now til 2/16) - "Galloping: An Exhibition for the Year of the Horse". In this exhibit are fantastic pieces of horse paintings spanning the last 400+ years, including such famous artists as Tang Ying, Xu Beihong, Zheng Yuebo, Ou Haonian, etc. It's not everyday that we can get up close and personal to see these masterpieces. I
was personally very moved by Xu Beihong's horse, which is featured on the attached poster. Xu was trained in France, and was a master of both oils and ink painting. During the outbreak of war in the late 1930s and early 1940s, Xu sold many of his horse paintings to raise funds for the war relief effort in China.
On view in this exhibit are also two giant stone rubbings of the relief horse sculptures in the Tang Dynasty Emperor Taizong's tomb. Emperor Taizong has 6 favorite horses, they have all been through good times and bad with him including fighting in battles. When he was dying, he asked that a relief sculpture of each of them be carved and buried with him. These rubbings (prints made from the stone sculpture) were supposedly done before 1914, when the sculptures were broken and a couple of them stolen and later sold to the US, two of the relief sculptures now reside in the University of Pennsylvania.
In addition, there is a life size replica of a Qin Dynasty terracotta chariot pulled by 4 horses on loan from Xian, China.
This is a wonderful opportunity to expose our students to high quality Chinese art with a lovable subject matter: horse. I hope you can make time to visit this exhibition, take time to walk around and examine the powerful brushwork of some of the life-size horse paintings that make the horses look almost abstract, and you have to step back to see them, and some really refined work that are just precious.
The SVAAC is located conveniently on the 4th floor (top floor) of the Central Computer Building, at the corner of Stevens Creek Blvd. and Saratoga Avenue.
Address: 3777 Stevens Creek Blvd., 4th Floor, Santa Clara (parking and entrance in the back of the building)
Opening Hours: Wednesday to Sunday 11am -5pm.
Exhibition Date: From now to Feb. 16th.
Best Regards,
Karen Tseng

3777 Stevens Creek Blvd, #400,Santa Clara, CA 95051. (408)248-2698,www.artshu.com
