Dear Colleagues,
My name is Gretchen Wheeler and I am the Chair of the Comm. College award selection committee this year. It is that time of year again for the gathering of nominations for the Michael and Suzanne Osborn Community College Outstanding Educator Award!  The Next e-newsletter from NCA will have the call for nominations in it but in case you don't read that from beginning to end, I wanted to get this out to you.  PLEASE help us spread the word about the award to others that may NOT be on this list serve.  And more importantly, PLEASE look around at all of the wonderful colleague we have doing amazing teaching in the Comm. INFORMATION ABOUT THE AWARD:

NEW FOR 2013

With the approval of the Community College Section in 2012 acting as the trustee for the award, the following changes were made:

  • The “Community College Outstanding Educator Award” was renamed the “Michael and Suzanne Osborn Community College Outstanding Educator Award”
  • Nominees must still have a minimum of five years teaching experience at a community college, however, they no longer need to be currently teaching at a community college to be eligible for the award
  • At least one member of the selection committee must currently teach full time at a community college


Michael and Suzanne Osborn Community College Outstanding Educator Award


The Community College Outstanding Educator Award recognizes an individual who has 

made an outstanding contribution teaching at a community college. NCA members who 

have made outstanding contributions to education at community colleges and who 

exemplify excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service to the speech communication 

profession.

   

Nominees must be members of NCA at the time of nomination and must have a minimum of 

five years teaching experience at a community college. The recipient is presented with a 

plaque and a cash award from the Community College Award Fund.

  

Nominations must be sent to the selection committee chair by someone well acquainted with 

the nominee’s qualifications.  Self-nominations are encouraged.  All nominations shall be made by someone familiar with the nominee's qualifications that shall provide a letter of support identifying the nominee's strengths and contributions. Self-nominations are encouraged. 


The nomination must include: 

• A cover letter stating why the person should be recognized by the Association for 

excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service to the speech communication 

profession. 

• The nominee's vita. 

• Letters of recommendation from up to three persons familiar with the nominee's 

qualifications.  Additional letters will not be considered. 

• Materials demonstrating evidence of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service 

to the profession.  Such items may include evidence of students who have pursued 

further study in communication, high standards of student achievement, faculty 

evaluations, scholarship in communication and related fields, and active 

participation in state, regional, and national communication associations and related 

organizations.
