CCF Seminar: Detecting and monitoring climate change impacts in arid
ecosystems: a climate driven range shift in a Namib desert tree aloe
(Aloe dichotoma)
Wendy Foden, IUCN Species Programme
Thursday 17th April, 1-2pm
UNEP-WCMC, 219 Huntingdon Rd, CB3 0DL
Wendy Foden, the IUCN's Climate Change Programme Officer, will present
her work in the Namib
and other arid regions of Southern Africa, where she discovered some
of the first clear evidence of
climate change impacts on an arid ecosystem as well as in Africa.
Based on extensive field studies
and historical photographs, Wendy and her collaborators were able to
piece together clear evidence
of a poleward range shift in a giant desert aloe (Aloe dichotoma). She
will describe the implications of
these and related findings for our understanding of climate change
impacts on arid ecosystem
biodiversity.
