This evening, the Council met for the last time this semester and
decided upon the different amounts of money to give to various
organizations and events. As you know, Chinese Corner was one of the
events that was considered.
After questions and voting, the Council decided to grant only $600 to
Chinese Corner for the Fall 2011 semester.
Some of the arguments of the Council members are as follows:
--Chinese Corner only serves a very small portion of the College of Arts
and Sciences student body.
--The majority of the money goes towards food, which does not meet the
goals of the College Council.
This is my response:
--Firstly, Chinese Corner was not designed to serve the majority of the
Arts and Sciences student body (which numbers in the thousands)--to my
knowledge, no weekly event in this entire University has the capability
of serving that many people. Chinese Corner is intended for students of
Chinese and native Chinese speakers; allowing other students to
participate would not only defeat the purpose of Chinese Corner (they
would have nothing to say!), but it would also be a major strain on
resources.
--Secondly, Chinese Corner is not just about the food. Yes, money buys
food, but the food is there to serve a purpose, and that is to attract
native speakers and students of Chinese with a nice meal once a week so
there will be plenty of people the students may practice with and get
their speaking assignments completed on time.
It is ridiculously difficult to get Council members to understand just
how important Chinese Corner is. The only way to make them understand is
to invite them to Chinese Corner--I have encouraged members of the
Council several times to attend Chinese Corner, but no one has shown up.
I will continue asking Council members to come out, but in the meantime,
we must work with the funding we have.
谢谢,
立忠
Also, I can't come to Chinese Corner tonight:( I'm sorry and I hope to meet you all soon!

Hey guys I plan to talk to Dean Yu someday next week. Is funding from ASC for next semester already decided? Can we still try to lobby them and make any change? From Dean Yu, I'm thinking of either seeking funding from his office or just getting some suggestions about how we could persuade ASC to give us more money. (it actually depends on his ability to support individual student orgs... And we should just hope for the best and prepare for the worst)
