A very good documentary on Dr. John O’Connor and the tar sands.  Just released, well worth listening to and distributing/posting.

Undue Alarm
Syncrude Oil Mining operation, Alberta Canada Syncrude Oil Mining operation, Alberta Canada
The biggest known oil reserve in the world. A tiny community of aboriginal Canadians. And a Limerick GP.
"Undue Alarm" is the story of how Dr. John O'Connor became a tireless campaigner on behalf of the First Nations communities - and found himself at the centre of a nationwide controversy in Canada.
When Limerick man Dr. John O'Connor went to Canada to practice medicine, he had little idea how his life would unfold.
The Alberta Oil Sands is the biggest industrial project on the planet. The area currently being mined for oil is the size of Ireland. Downstream from this on the shores of Lake Athabasca lies the tiny native community of Fort Chipewyan.
A breathtakingly beautiful place, 'Fort Chip' is on the far northeastern tip of the province of Alberta. In winter it is accessible by the 'ice road' - a road that is constructed from the harsh northern climate. In summer access is by way of a small plane.
Most of the people that live here are either Méti or First Nation - that is, native Canadians who have lived on the land through traditional methods of trapping, hunting, fishing and gathering berries for generations.

In 1993 Dr. O'Connor - or Dr. O as locals call him - became family physician to the tiny community of 1,200 people. When he started hearing concerns among the community about elevated rates of cancer in the community he did something that no outsider had done before: he listened to them. Then he spoke out about it. And what happened next is not what he expected.
A raft of professional complaints were made against him by the Canadian health authorities. And he would live with one of these - 'causing undue alarm' among the community - for five years.
Dr. O'Connor went from being a simple GP to a tireless campaigner and activist on behalf of native communities in Canada.
"Undue Alarm" was made with the assistance of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland Sound and Vision Fund

Interviews Murray Klippenstein, myself and others (defendants have been invited) on Justice Wittmann's ruling that Alberta energy regulator can do as they please, can fail (the word 'omissions' is not in ERCA section 43 protection clause) to protect Albertans, our water or lands, and can violate the constitutional rights of Canadians with immunity.  For air times in your zone, check above link.  will also be later available on the website, i think.

Many of you will have followed the story of Jessica Ernst who for almost a decade has been in a legal struggle against Encana and the Alberta Regulator for damages caused by fracking.  A book on this story by Andrew Nikiforuk will be released on September 12.  Both Ernst and Nikiforuk have toured in Nova Scotia several times since 2011.

Talk and Book Launch at Ground Zero
Slick Water: Fracking and One Insider’s Stand Against the World’s Most Powerful Industry

Rosebud, Alberta – Investigative journalist Andrew Nikiforuk launches Slick Water at Ground Zero Saturday, September 12, presenting a book talk, followed by Q and A.

Slick Water reveals the shocking story of Jessica Ernst’s determined stand to hold Encana, and Alberta regulators accountable for damages caused by fracking. When Ernst’s dogs refused to drink her well water and she suffered caustic burns from it, the oil patch consultant began asking questions; she discovered Encana had secretly fracked hundreds of gas wells around Rosebud in the fresh water zones.

After Ernst filed her lawsuit and put forward evidence that Encana had violated laws by fracturing the community's drinking water aquifers, she was falsely tagged as a bomb-making terrorist and harassed by the Harper government’s anti-terrorism squad. Frightened but undaunted, she uncovered a startling history of liability, fraud, and intimidation, along with a willful denial of widespread groundwater contamination.

In his powerful work, Nikiforuk interweaves Ernst’s story with the history and science of fracking, as well as human and environmental harms left in its wake.

Nikiforuk has been writing about the oil and gas industry for more than 20 years and the Ernst case since 2004. He won the Rachel Carson Environmental Book Award for Tar Sands, Canada's Governor General Award for Saboteurs, seven national magazine awards, and the 2013 Writers’ Trust Award in Celebration of a Writing Life. He was one of the first journalists in North America to document the devastating effects of hydraulic fracturing on communities. He lives in Calgary, Alberta (And...@andrewnikiforuk.com).
