If you know anyone who feels strongly about nuclear power or uranium mining, they may wish to attend this Patrick Moore talk. For those of you who don’t know who Patrick Moore is… he is, as they say, one of the founders of Greenpeace. But he’s since distanced himself and tends to take a contrarian position to most ‘accepted’ environmental stances. While it’s good to have a gadfly, I did not enjoy his talk when I saw him. I found him smug and precocious, purely on a personal level.
He is for GMO foods, pro-nuclear, and argued against the number of species we are apparently losing to extinction, to name just a few. We did not pass this through to our members, as it is not an EAC event, however, I believe this notice went to our Energy Issues Committee.

request)
Hello,
Could you kindly pass this information on through your EAC contact network one more time? We'd really like to have community groups, NGOs, and interested members of the public take part in this conference. Remember that the Patrick Moore event (founder of Greenpeace) on the evening of October 5th is a free public event.
Thank you very much,
Sairah
Mining Exposed 2009:
Our Nuclear Worldfrankness. clarity. insight.
We are pleased to announce Mining Exposed 2009: “Our Nuclear World”, taking place on October 6th and 7th at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A free pre-conference event will take place on the evening of October 5th at Pier 21 as Patrick Moore (founder of Greenpeace) joins us to provide his take on nuclear energy’s role in the future's mix of energy options.
The conference intent is to discuss a variety of issues associated with the use of nuclear materials in society – from exploration and mining through usage and disposal. We expect the audience will be made up of a cross-section of individuals from NGOs, all levels of government, academia, energy industry representatives, health care, the mining industry, environmental professionals, students, and interested members of the public -- thereby encompassing a range of diverse opinions, attitudes, and perceptions about nuclear energy. Additional information can be found in the attached documents, as well as online at http://www.miningexposed2009.esans.ca.
The conference is being hosted by the Environmental Services Association of Nova Scotia (www.esans.ca) and the Mining Association of Nova Scotia (www.tmans.ca).
This will be an extraordinary event. Please pass on the word to those that you think may be interested in attending.

1. the minister of environment, Sterling Belliveau did confirm at
the NSEN annual fall gathering this past weekend that the NDP
supports the moratorium against uranium mining. He also spoke very
highly of a woman named Perry (recently deceased) who led the fight
against the locating of a nuclear power plant on Stoddard Island on
the south shore and that she had been a tremendous influence on him
and his thinking.
This looks like an opportunity for anyone working directly in the
anti-nuclear/uranium mining camp to be reminding the government that
its time to enact the legislation to keep uranium mining officially
out of NS.
2. The recent Eastern Premiers and New England governor's meeting
did have the premier speaking supportively about NS being a green
energy corridor- its important to get the NDP definition of "green"
energy made public so we know if nuclear slips in. That is certainly
how NB presents their nuclear.
3. A report this past week said that NB is paying $1million/day for
its electrical energy supply while the $1.2 billion retrofit of Point
Lepreau continues. I believe it is about 16 or 18 months overtime
for completion (and that's just so far). Its all guaranteed by AECL-
that is the Canadian tax dollar- this happened under Paul Martin's
government.
