Dear Premier Rankin and Minister Clark,

I am writing in support of Jacob Fillmore in saying that we need an immediate moratorium on the clearcutting of crown lands, pending implementation of the Lahey report. I’d would encourage you to meet with Jacob right away as he intends to maintain his hunger strike.

I have been a researcher in the field of climate change for over 20 years. As you have acknowledged, we are in a crisis and don’t have time to waste.

The Lahey Report should be seen as a beginning point. I along with the majority of Nova Scotians do not support clearcutting on any lands in Nova Scotia. I ask that you would look at other provinces such as Quebec and Ontario where this practise is not allowed. I also do not support spraying of glysophate. Mexico has recently banned it entirely. And unfortunately it does not address biomass which is a huge problem for our forests and our climate.

This is an important opportunity to shift direction for all Nova Scotians. Please take it.

Sincerely,

Peggy Cameron

P.S. Here’s a good summary of the problems from the practices that NS is confronted with in the forestry sector and need to be addressed.  https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/19/activist-on-hunger-strike-calls-on-canadian-government-to-halt-logging
