Greetings CCC local senate folks,

Here at Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) some members of our local senate exec are researching what kinds of contractual language and/or professional development practices other California Community Colleges (CCCs) have regarding requiring faculty to have expertise or engage in professional development to qualify to teach online.

Faculty at our college are interested in doing something to ensure our online instructors have some expertise in teaching effectively in this modality.

If your college has contract language, or other established procedures for faculty to qualify to teach online would you please reply and send me a link to these resources, as well as any comments you might want to add?

Thank you all in advance!

take care,

Nancy

Hello all:

In cooperation (and with leadership provided from) our academic senate, we developed a robust online certification process for all faculty teaching both online and onlinelive (Zoom synchronous). The chart below explains this with more information at the link below.

To become online certified, we offer our Introduction to Online Instruction (IOI) class as a NC course (36 hours, CDCP – fully enhanced funding) which is taught be our faculty in a 5-week asynchronous format. Creating this NC class was intentional to help institutionalize a course we had been offering and paying for out of a BSSOT grant funds in the mid-2010s. Not only do we provide expert instruction to our faculty, but we also generate FTEs. It's a win/win.

Sincerely,

At Glendale Community College, we have an in-house designed 40-hour Instructional Online Teaching and Learning course that all faculty that want to teach online must complete if they do not have certification from another campus or an organization like @One.

We also have a requirement of three hours for full time/2 hours for part time faculty annual professional development requirement to stay active for teaching online.

Yes! We have annual recertification requirements.

Our Glendale CC training is the 40-hour @ONE Introduction to Online Teaching & Learning course that we adopted in 2018 as part of @ONE's Train the Trainer program.

Hello,

At Compton College we have a certification that requires three 40 hour courses:

  1. Intro to Canvas
  2. Intro to Online Teaching
  3. Accessibility

In addition, the faculty member needs to then prepare a demonstration (one module in Canvas that show understanding and application of all the principles of effective online teaching). Our Distance Ed is now establishing standards for annual PD in order for folk to recertify/maintain their ongoing certification.

Warm regards,

Thank you so much for sharing this, Minodora,

Do you by chance have a link you could share to any contract or Board policy language that I could review?

take care,

Nancy
