Hi everyone,

Our district, like many, is pushing dual enrollment.  Instructors are hired as independent contractors, and last year we were able to restrict these to high school teachers who were also employed by us as adjuncts, so were were able to control for minimum qualifications.  This year we were flooded with requests for classes, despite an agreement to "grow slowly," and at least 75% of the high school instructors proposed were asking for equivalency.  Our faculty would rather not use equivalency for dual enrollment, as maintaining standards is a big concern.

I know that legally we must have an equivalency policy and process.  Is it legal to say we won't approve equivalencies for independent contractors or dual enrollment?  Would it be legal for entire disciplines or departments at the college to choose NOT to allow equivalencies?  (I have seen the latter in some Equivalency policies.)

We have completely new people on our Professional Standards Committee, so I am trying to help sort out some of these issues.  I read through the paper adopted at the spring plenary but still have questions...

Thanks for any help/advice!

Hello,

Our college has an equivalency process and, as long as its followed, will ensure appropriate equivalency.  We can’t bend those rules.

That’s my two cents

I will chime in here since we do dual enrolment currently,

Our dual enrolment instructors are subject to our part-time (adjunct) hiring process. They have to meet minimum qualifications and get signed off by Dean, Department Chair, and all full-time faculty.

They instruct on our campus and/or at the high-school we have negotiated with. They also have to meet our outside accrediting bodies standards (NATEF, and ASE).

We do this to control the quality of the course, and assure the rigor is identical to our programs.
